Founding of Rome
753 BC The founding of Rome was by two brothers. Their names were Romulus and Remus. Rome's location was across valuable trade routes. They began a great city that later became an important part in the history of Rome. -

Rome becomes a Republic
509 BC The Roman republic was formed when Romans revolted against the last king, who was a tyrant. The two classes of people in Rome were known as patricians and plebians. Patricians were elected officials, and the plebians were common people. -

From Republic to Empire
60 BC Several people helped bring an end to the republic. They wre Julius Caesar, Gnaeus Pompey, and Licinius Crassus. In 60 BC, the three of them formed what is called the First Triumvirate. After Crassus died, Caesar took full control of the republic. He was declared dictator for life. -

Judaism in the Roman World
63 BC Judea was conquered by Roman armies after many months of battling. The Romans took control of Judea and chose a new king. However, the Jews did not want to have the same religion as the Romans. The Roman leaders allowed the Jews to keep their religous beliefs as long as they still paid their tribute. -

Pax Romana
27 BC - AD 180 The Pax Romana is the period from Augustus's reign until the death of the last of the Good Emperors. During that time, there were several essential traits established. Rome had a stable government, strong legal system, widespread trade, and peace. During this time, Rome rarely had a war or invasion. -

Reign of Diocletian
During the reign of Diocletian, Rome was changed into an absolute monarchy. Since he wanted to help improve the ruling of Rome, he split the empire in two, Diocletian ruled the western half, and he chose someone else to run the other half. They both appointed another person to be assistants, or Caesars. -

Constantine
After Diocletian decided to step down from his position as emporer, the two Caesars became co-emporers. Later they began to fight and a civil war broke out. When Constantine stopped the war, he was named the new emporer. He made two important decisions for Rome. He promoted Christianity, and he built a new capital called Consantinople. -

End of Christian Persecutions
During the spread of Christianity, Constantine was Rome's emporer. He was converted by a vision that was supposdedly before a battle. After winnng the war, he issued the Edict of Milan. It made Christianity legal in the Roman empire. -

Fall of the West
In the western provinces, Germanic tribes controlled almost all of the western provinces. Odoacer, a barbarian commander, overthrew the last emporer in the west. That led to the end of the Western Roman Empire. The Eastern Empire withstood for many more centuries. -
The Good Emperors
The Good Emporers were made up of five rules who governed Rome for a century. The empire grew excessivley because the Good Emperors kept admitting new members in the Senate and the imperial administration. One of the rulers was named Trajan. He added Romania, Armenia, Mesopotamia, and he Sinai Peninsula to the empire.
