Named President when McKinley is assassinated
President William McKinley is shaking hands at the Pan-American Exhibition in Buffalo, New York, when a 28-year-old anarchist named Leon Czolgosz approaches him and fires two shots into his chest. The president rose slightly on his toes before collapsing forward, saying “be careful how you tell my wife.” -
Elkins Act passed
Introduced by Senator Elkins (WV) the Elkins Act ammended the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887. It stopped the practice Of railroad companies providing a monitary rebate to companies which shipped large amounts of goods by rail. The companies were playing the rail companies against each other and the railroads paid large sums to keep their business. -
Pelican Island, FL named first national wildlife refuge
Located near Sebastian, FL, Pelican Island was named the first federal bird reservation. This was the beginning of the National Wildlife Refuge System. The first warden of Pelican Island was Paul Kroegel (in pic with pelican). -
Wins first full term as President
Won 56% of the popular vote against Alton Parker (38%) and 336 to 140 in the Electoral College. His running mate was Charles Fairbanks. -
