Yosemite Under Federal Control
John Muir and Robert Underwood Johnson were environmentalists. Sheep grazers kept tearing up land. The next year congress set aside 1,500 square miles of land for the establishment of Yosemite National Park. -
Named President after McKinley Assassination
Theodore Roosevelt was elected as the vice president under McKinley. McKinley was shot with a .32 slug in the stomach. McKinley didn't die from that and slowly started recovery. The Energy Crisis
The energy crisis was born due to the unfair treatment of the coal companies employees. Working conditions were awful. Work days were long and hard with few breaks. Employees went on strike which caused a shortage of coal. Without the coal energy wasn't being produced.

Elkins Act Passed
The Elkins Act of 1903 was proposed to end rebates on the railroads. The Elkins Act backed what the Interstate Commerce published. Which enforced no rebates. -
Pelican Island, Florida named first national wildlife refuge
Frank Chapman and Florida Audubon Society would protect these birds. The birds would be injured and they would help them out. Theodore Roosevelt took an interest as he was a conservationist. Teddy Roosevelt won his first election in 1904. He was elected during McKinley's term after he was assassinated. -
Passage of Pure Food and Drug Act
The book written by Upton Sinclair "The Jungle" was written about the meat industries. These meat industries were filthy and full of diseases. Which was unhealthy for all people. Devils Tower, Wyoming became the first national monument.
The idea that the tower be preserved and become a monument was in 1892. Due to lack of congressional support nothing was passed and, the area went from 63 miles of forest surrounding Devils Tower was reduced to 18.75 square miles. It wasn't until the Antiquities Act was passed in June 1906 that Devils Tower be brought up again.

Leaves the Presidency and visits Africa

Roosevelt left the presidency in 1908 with the intent of not returning.
