    In 1902 was the Anthracite Coal Strike in Pennsylvania. Miners struck for higher wages, shorter work days, and recognition of their union. President Theodore Roosevelt became involved and set up a fact-finding commission that suspended the strike. The strike never resumed, as the miners expectations were given. It was the first labor dispute in which the US federal government intervened as a neutral arbitrator.

The Elkins Act of 1903 gave federal courts the power to end rate discrimination and upheld the rates published by the Interstate Commerce Commission.This outlawed rebates and made the railroad company itself liable for punishment along with the entity receiving the refund.

    Pelican Island, Florida named first national wildlife refugee
    In 1903, President Roosevelt signed an executive order establishing Pelican Island as the first federal bird reservation. It was created to protect egrets and other birds from extinction through plume hunting. He established a network of 55 bird reservation and national game preserved for wildlife. Pelican Island was the first time that the federal government set aside land for the sake of wildlife.

    In 1906, President Roosevelt met with naturalist John Muir and, this resulted in the signature on the Yosemite Recession Bill.This Joint Resolution accepted the recession by the State of California of the Yosemite Valley Grant and the Mariposa Big Tree Grove, now the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, which withdrew them from state protection and put them under federal protection, making them part of Yosemite National Park.

The party also became known as the Bull Moose Party. In November Roosevelt was defeated by Democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson, who benefited from the divided Republican Party.
