    Pg. 39- chapter 3"First of all," he said "if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kind of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."
    Context: Atticus says this to scout after her first day of school that didn't go so well for her.
    Theme: Atticus tells her what empathy is, scout needs to learn empathy and be able to use it.
  • Tom Robinsons Case

    Pgs. 139-140 chapter11"This case, Tom Robinson's case, is something that goes to the essence of a man's conscience--... The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a persons conscience.
    Context: talking about how Atticus hopes that Scout and Jem will come talk to him about her problems instead of listening to the entire town.
    Theme: the theme is that she is trying to realize that she needs to talk to Atticus instead of catching the towns disease. She needs to not listen to the others.
  • Mr. Cunningham

    Mr. Cunningham
    Pgs. 204-206- chapter 15 "He's in my grade" I said "and he does right well. He's a good boy," I added "a real nice boy. We brought him home for dinner one time. Maybe he told you about me, I beat him up one time but he was real nice about it. Tell him he for me, won't you?
    Context: Atticus is sitting outside the jail. Mr. Cunningham was talking to Scout. Mob was about to lynch Tom.
    Theme: Mr. Cunningham steps into Scout and Atticus shoes. He realized that neither of them had done any wrong.

    Pg. 210-chapter 15"you children last night made Walter Cunningham stand in my shoes for a minute and that was enough."
    Context: Atticus is talking about the mob last night and how Mr. Cunningham was in the mob and trying to hurt him.
    Theme: Mr. Cunningham stood in Atticus shoes and saw what it was like to be him because of Scout it took the thought of an 8 year old child to make them see what was happening.
  • Scout and Jem

    Scout and Jem
    Pg. 77-chapter 7"As Atticus had once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jem's skin and walk around it in: if I had gone alone to the Radley Place at two in the morning, my funeral would have been held the next afternoon. So I left Jem alone and tried not to bother him."
    Context: Jem had to go back to the Radley place to get his pants and was in a bad mood and Scout leaves him alone by using empathy.
    Theme: she does what Atticus tells her and uses empathy to understand Jem.
  • Scout and Atticus

    Scout and Atticus
    Pg. 117- chapter 9 Atticus says, "I hope and pray I can get Jem and scout through this without bitterness, and most of all, without catching Maycombs usual disease... I just hope Jem and Scout come to me for their answers instead of listening to the town."
    Context:Atticus is talking to Uncle Jack about Scout and Jem and how he hopes that they will come and talk to him about the disease.
    Theme: this relates to empathy because Uncle Jack may not know what Atticus is gong through.
  • Boo Radley

    Boo Radley
    Pg. 374 chapter 31"Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. Just standing on the Radley porch was enough."
    Context: Scout had just walked Boo Radley home and was standing on his porch looking at the neighborhood form his view and perspective of things taking it all in.
    Theme: this shows empathy because boo Radley has a completely different view and perspective of things. Scout sees things from his perspective.

    Empathy: when you can put yourself in another person position and feel how they are feeling. Maybe you have been through the same experience of you can imagine or think about what they are going through or feeling.
