Hi my name is Liam, I was born in Dublin Ireland on April 20, 1879. We are moving to america because they have better jobs. Plus we didnt have enough money to buy food and supplies for the farm we lve on so we had to move to america so we could earn more money. -
Statue of Liberty
My family decided to move to America becasue we needed better jobs. I am 13 now and I am riding on the boat that is taking us to america. When we first get to america we all see one thing right at the same time and we are amazed by the sight of it. It is the statue of liberty, surrounded by fog and a haze from the ships smoke. Every one is silent and just at the sight of it I think i am goin to have a great life here in America. -
Rough life at first.
From 1892 to 1893 we had a very rough life we had no home and no jobs. We had to live in slums, they are so nasty and smelly. There are always people getting sick or even dying in slums because it is so bad. -
Getting approved.
We have been waiting on the ship for 2 days now because there are so many people in the station already. We came during one of the most busy years for imigration and ellis island is packed with immigrants. But finaly it is our turn to go get approved in the ellis island imigration station. First we get our eyes checked to make sure we dont have a disease. second we go to take a mental test to see if we know how to count . Third, legal inspection, fourth, detention if needed. Fifth is freedom! -

The first Year in America
The first year of our life is america was very hard and rough. We did not find a house at first so we had to live in the streets or hide in someones barn for the night. Then we move into a tenement, which is a neighborhood that has many slums in it. Slums are houses with many people in, usually to many people, so the houses are always crowded. We were in a slum that had just been started though so it wasnt as full as all of the others. Im glad we found a house and hopefully we can get some jobs. -
Getting Jobs
My Dad finally got a job and we are making money by the month. Its not that much money but it helps us get through. We are able to get better food and we are planning on buying a house of our own when we get enough money. My dad works on a construction crew and he helps build skyscrapers which is very dangerous. He makes $4 a week. My mom works in a fabric factory where they make new clothing. She earns about $5 a week. Me and my brothers have jobs working on a farm he pays 25cents a hour. -
Buying a new House
We finally got enough money to buy a new house! its not that big but it is better than the slums that we used to live in. It has 2 bedrooms, and a kitchen and there is a outhouse in the back yard.
I have to share a bed with my brother and my parents sleep in the other. We have 2 peices of furniture, a shair and a couch.
