They were founded to protect European pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem. They have been thought to have invented the check and a line of credit. They mysteriously disappeared in the early 14th century. Many were burned at the stake. -

Mongols Gain Power
The Liao Dynasty fell, which made the Mongols the leading power on the steppe, and allowed to gain control of Northern China. They continued to build the largest empire in the history of the world. They had some of the most feared warriors in history. Under the rule of Ghengis Khan they conquered much of Asia, and parts of Europe. -

Incas begin to assemble
At the beginning of the 13th century, the Incan people started to assemble in the beginnings of the Incan Empire. The Incan Empire would become arguably the most advanced civilization in the Americas in that millenium. -

Fourth Crusade
The Crusaders of Western Europe sacked Constantinople. They set up "Latin" states in the Byzantine lands that they conquered. The Fourth Crusade was seen as one of the last acts in the Great Schism.
