Brainstorm
Generate ideas by brainstorming and exploring a topic. You can use any means: maps, timelines, webs, pictures, etc. Literally spill out your ideas in your notebook and don't censor yourself! -
Choose a Topic and Pre-Write it!
Graphic Organizer Approved by the MCAS After determining which topic to write about, you should begin exploring this idea using different strategies like two-column notes and graphic organizers. -
Drafting
Begin drafting your work! -
Drafting- Opening Paragraph
Come up with an interesting opening sentence in order to draw in your reader. Start with posing a question, describing a scene, an anecdote or even a shocking statistic. -
Drafting- Multiparagraphs
- Break up your writing into multi-pargraphs that focus on one aspect of your topic. Make sure to include sensory details and interesting vocabularly words! Make sure they relate back to the topic you've chosen!
-
Drafting-Conclusion
End your piece of writing by looking back at your opening paragraph, specifically your opening sentence. If you started with a question, perhaps you should answer it! Revisit your introductory paragraph in order to create a circular ending. Or perhaps, leave your reader with a few questions to consider. -
Editing and Revision
Re-read your work and make sure you fix any grammatical or spelling errors in your writing. Use a red-pen so your corrections stand out! Locate several places in your writing where you can add more details and sensory language. Place an asterisk (*) in places that require LOTS of details and re-write that section on a new piece of paper! Find places where you have digressed off topic and get rid of them. -
Peer-Editing
Rewrite a new, clean draft of your writing and submit it to a neighbor for peer-editing. When peer-editing someone else's work, make sure you follow the checklist. Make sure to include grows/ grows! -
Final Draft
Type up your final draft in a word-processor. Make sure you use Times New Roman size 12 font and double-space! Heading: Name
