World War I
Due to very well played British influence and Germany's blockade controlling sea access to Europe, America entered the war in 1917 and helped build up a large garrison by shipping out hundreds of thousands each week with millions training at home. This is change as the US had not had a major war with other countries in the world. -
The Great Depression
The Stock Market has crashed sending millions of Americans into debt, at this point all of the US was doubtful and depressed. Without immediate action the United States themselves would end up in dire need of outside support and would most likely not remain a world power. The Great Depression is a major change in the world as it was the first time that the US had had a major economic slump. -
The New Deal
Made by Frankling Roosevelt this "New Deal" was designed to give more aid to at risk Americans in need of employment or facing problems due to medical complications. This Deal also led to the creation of the Social Secruity system. The addition of these systems and the New Deal itself was a change to the society because it helped the unemployed and elderly, something nothing else had done before. -
World War II
The US joined the 2nd World War after the Japanese bombed our naval port, Pearl Harbor. This was the first direct attack towards us and after that it became one of the problems we had to deal with. This is a continuity as the world had already a major world war, but there were a few changes including facism. -
The Cold War
The stalement and big talk of the US and USSR began in 1945 when the Cold War began. While not really a war it was more of two countries showboating and trying to appear more superior than the other. This time period also coined the phrase "Iron Curtain" from Winston Churchill as Communism affected the country of Germany. This time frame was a continuity because the war with Communism was someting already being done by the US. -
Nagasaki
The day the US dropped their first atomic bomb on Japan, significant because it showed that there was a new form of mass destruction, and the US possessed them. Nagasaki was a change to the entire world as this was the first actual use of an atomic bomb. -
Hiroshima
On this day the US dropped their second atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, this was to quash the still growing resistance as Japan was uneager to surrender and had a strong will. This bomb however brought with it the end of Japan's will and World War II. This bomb was a continuity because one had already been dropped and the effects already known. -
NATO
Under the leadership of the United States, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed by most of the W. Europe powers, Canada and the US. This was to oppose the USSR and their spreading of Communism. It also was used to protect the developing countries in the European area from Communism. This was a continuity because NATO just wrote down the bonding between US, Europe and Canada as well as fighting Communism. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
John Kennedy in 1962 talked to the USSR and told them to remove the missiles from Cuba. These missiles were set there for "defensive purposes" but using pursusion and the promise of not invading Cuba the USSR removed the missiles and left the US alone. Complete change, this was one of the first times the US felt threatened by a Communist country. -
Boycott
On this day in 1980, the USSR's invasion of Afghanistand led to the US boycotting the Olympics in Moscow. This was one of the major points of the two super powers conflicts as it came across in sports. These types of actions are what led to the rivalry and anger between the two superpowers. No other major superpower country had boycotted an Olympic Games so this is a change to the games.
