The War of 1812

  • Cause Of The War

    -After the Napoleonic Wars, Great Britain created many laws that negatively affected the United State's economy.
    -Great Britain ordered a blockade of trade and decreed that neutral and French ships would be seized if they entered a British port before entering a continental port.
  • The War Is Decreed

    The War Is Decreed
    -President James Madison signs a declaration of war against Great Britain after all of the economic stress they were put on.
  • Upper Canada

    Upper Canada
    Major-General Sir Isaac Brock leads the British in capturing an important American post at Michilimackinac Island. After doing this, they were forced to move to York to prevent an attempted invasion from the American side.
    -With Shawnee chief Tecumseh, Brock demanded Detroit was surrendered.

    -The Americans lose an army at Queenston Heights.

    William Henry Harrison attempts to retake Detroit with his army but fails.

    The Americans infiltrate York with 16 ships, burning down buildings and stealing naval supplies

    -Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Wanton Morrison reverses yet another invasion of advancing Americans at Crysler's Farm.
  • Upper Canada

    -American command evacuates Fort George.
    -American militia burned down Newark causing the British to retaliate by burning down Buffalo. Washington was eventually burned down.
  • Upper Canada

    -Americans attempt to recapture Fort Michilimackinac.
    -British gain some control over Lake Huron with two schooners named the Tigress and Scorpion.

    -Both sides fight at Lundy's Lane ending in a stalemate.
    -American side withdraws to Fort Erie.

    -After a three-month standoff, the Americans withdrew across the Niagara River ending the war.
  • The Treaty of Ghent

    -On Christmas Eve, the Treaty of Ghent is signed after peace talks which had begun the previous August ending the war.
  • Aftermath

    -Neither side lost much land.
    -Britain stopped harassing the U.S.
    -Britain stopped doing the things which had caused the war in the first place (Capturing U.S ships, harassing U.S settlement etc.).
    -Britain wanted to begin trade again.
