President Madison came into office in 1809. At that point, Tension with Britain was very high. -
War Hawks take Power
Relationahip with Britian worsend as the years went on. War Hawks were people that were eager for war with Great Britain. Some War Hawks included Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun. -
Relations with Great Briatian Worsen
Americans were very angery at Britan. Britain armed Native Americans in the Northwest. Americans also resented the impressment of American soilders by the British. -
Congress Declairs War on Britian
Congress declairs War in June. At the time Britian was continuing impressing soildiers. Native Americans were also carring out new attacks on the frontier settlements. -
America is not Ready for War
When Jefferson became president he cut the number of troops in the military. When the war started America was not ready because they didnt have enough men. The spending cuts weakened the military strengh. -
Britian Blockades American Ports
In the first days of the war, Britian blockaded the American coast. Britain had 135 warships blockading American ports. By the end of the war they had closed alll ports. -
Invashion of Canada
As Hull's men invated Canada through Detroit, they were forced to retreat. General Isaac Brock took advantage of this. The British army surrounded the, and forced them to surrender. -
USS Constitution Scores a Victory
In August 1812, The USS defeated British warship "Gurriene". It was a fierce battle. To the Americans, their ship fekt like iron as the artillery fire bounced off of it. -
Battle of Lake Erie
A three hour battle took place at Put-in-Bay. It took place in the western part of the Bay. During the battle an American flagship was damaged. The commander got another ship and fought the battle until it was won. -
Battle of Horseshoe Bend
Creek Warriors attacked American settlements. Andrew Jackson took over American forces in Georiga. Americans went on to defeat the Creeks in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. -
Washington DC Attacked and Burned
British Attacked Washington DC. Many government bulidings were attacked and burned. American Armies could not defend Washington. -
Writing the Star Spangled Banner
British attacked Baltimore. Frances Scott Key, a young American, watched the attack of Baltimore and noticed through it all, the American flag was still standing. The Star Spanglinged banner was first a poem. -
Hartford Convention
Delegates of the Hartford Convention suggested that the New England States sucede from the United States. The delegates debated. The Hartford Convention quickly ended when news of the peace treaty spred. -
Treaty of Ghent
Bratian had become tired of war. Talk of peace began in Ghent, Belgium. This later ended the war. -
Battle of New Orleans
The teaty of Ghent had been signed. But in 1815 news wasn't quick to get to the U.S. General Jackson won a victory in New Orleans that officially ended the war.
