War Hawks were eager to go to war with Great Britain. Some people thought war would harm America's trade. Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun were the leaders of the War Hawks. -

America is not Ready for War.
Jefferson's spending cuts weakend the military. The navy only had 16 warship in the biginning of war. America only had 7,000 men to fight. This war won't be so easy as America thought. -
Britain Blockades American Ports
In the beginning of war, Britain set up a blockade on American ports. A blockade is when a port is shut off to keep something in or out. In 1814, Britain had 135 ships blocking off America's ports. -
Invasion for Canada
Bofore war, the war hawks wanted to invade Canada. General William Hull led the invasion. The States lost to the British and Native Americans.More than 2,000 soldiers were captured on the American side. -
USS Constitution scores a victory
The USS Constitution defeated the warship Guerriere. The USS Constitution's nickname was, " Old Ironsides". It was called this because, their ammo bounced off the ship's wooden hull. it seemed she was made of iron. -
Battle of Lake Erie
This 3 hour battle took palce in Put-In-Bay. In the battle, American flagships were damaged. The commander was Oliver Hazard Perry. America didn't stop fighting untill they won, which they did. -
Second Battle of Sackets Harbor
British forces were transported across Lake Ontario to capture the town. The attack lasted untill the 29th. On the British side, 242 peole were dead. The Americans had 122 casulties. But, America lost the battle. -
Battle of Thames
After the British and Native Americans retreated, the U.S followed them. They followed them into Canada. The American won the Battle of Thames. Tecumseh was killed in the battle. -
Battle of Horseshoe Bend
Creek warriors attacked several American settlements. Andrew Jackson took command in Georgia. The Americans won the battle. The creeks had to give up millions of acres of land. -
Battle of Fort Oswego
The Battle of Fort Oswego was a surprise attack on the Americans by the British. The British won the battle. There were 80-87 casulties on the British side. There were 69-119 casulties on the American side. -
Washington, D.C Attacked & Burned
The British had a new strategy... ATTACK WASHINGTON, D.C. Troops marched to the nation's capital. The President's wife gathered the President's important papers and fled the White House. The British burned several important buildings, including the White House. They couldn't defend the capital. -
Attack on Baltimore
This battle was turning point for the war. The British had over 5,000 troops march to Baltimore. America only had 3,000 men to defend the city. At Fort McHenry, 1,000 soldiers waited for British bombardment. America won the battle. The British withdrawled. -
Battle of Plattsburg
This battle was the last invasion of the northern states in the war. The British sent 16,000 troops to America. America only had 3,400 troops. The British had over 10,000! But, in the end, America had won and stoped Britain offensives in their tracks. 104 were killed on the American side. 168 were killed on the British. The picture is of the monument. -
The Writing of the Star Spangled Banner
The author was Francis Scott Key. On the 14th, Key saw the flag at Fort McHenry. He was amazed that it was still standing. It inspired him to right a poem called, "Defence of Ft. McHenry. Eventually the the song was called, "The Star Spangled Banner". Congress Made it our natnal anthem in 1931. -
Hartford Convention
A group of delegates met in Hartford, Connecticut. They discused that or if the New England states should secede from the United States. When the war was over, the Convention quickly ended. -
Treaty of Ghent
Britain was very tired of war. On Christmas Eve the sides met in Ghent, Belgium to sign the Treaty of Ghent. The war was over! The treaty turned everything back to normal before the war. -
Battle of New Orleans
It took several weeks for the news of the treaty to be heard in the United States. In the time before the news, the two sides fought one more battle. The Americans won the battle over the British thanks to General Andrew Jackson.
