President Madison Takes Office
James Madison heled to write the Constituion, he also helped to pass the bill of rghts. the citizens thought that James' way of running the country was too shy, or modest, they thought that the country needed to stand up to the Native Americans. James wanted to keep America out of war. America went to war with Britain and the Native Americans. -
War Hawks Take Power
While President Madison did not want war, Americans did. New England wanted to restore trade with Britain, even though the two countries didnt get along the greatest. Congress member from the west and south called for war, they were called the war hawks. The war was called because Britain was still treating America like a British colony, also because they were fighting for their rights. -
Relations With Great Britain Worsen
The British were encouraging the Native Americans to attack the United States.The British were supplying the Native Americans with guns. The British and Americans disagreed on trade,so America said that if either France or Britain stopped taking their ships, they would stop all trade with the other country. Settlers from the south and west sent out to fight the British, were called war hawks. -
Congress Declares War on Britain
In 1811, Britain didnt want America trading with Fance, so they blocked some of their trading ports. There was a small battle between the two, and the Americans won. President Madison wanted to go to war, so he asked congress to declare war. they voted 79 in favor and 49 opposing the war. War almost immediately broke out and guns and cannons were freely fired. -
America is Not Ready for War
America called for war with Britain. Britain had very little extra troops to send to the U.S. The Americans only had 16 ships to fight the whole huge British fleet. Thomas Jefferson believed in a small federal government, because of this, the army was small and had barely any guns, and barely anyone knew much about the army. -
Britain Blockades American Ports
America made an offer with Britain and France, they said if either one of them would stop taking their ships, they'd stop trade with the other country. France liked of the offer, so they soon stopped seizing the ships. America stopped trade with Britain, so, they got mad and blocked American ports. England felt that the U.S. might win land in Canada. New England was scared that if this happened then the south and the west would be more of an influence on the new country then themselves. -
Invasion of Canada
General Hull moved his troops from Detroit to Canada. The Canadaians were led by a British general (Isaac Brock). Brock had the Canadians dress up in red, to make it look like they had British troops helping them. Brock also said that a lot of Indians were helping too. The "scare tactics", that Brock had set up, worked. General Hull retreated from Canada. Canadians faught their hardest, and forced Americans to retreat, leaving Canada under British rule. -
USS Constitution Scores a Victory
Isaac Hull saw a British ship, and the ships were "jockeying for position." The war broke out, the british ship got holes in it, anbd some of the masts were shot off. The British surrenedered, and America won. -
The Battle of Lake Eerie
America wanted control of Lake Eerie. They faught Britain for it. The British destroyed Oliver Perry's ship. America won the battle, therefore winning control of Lake Eerie. Perry wrote "We have met the enemy, and they are ours." -
Battle of Thames
Americans lost the Battle of Lake Eerie. British people fled to Canada. Henry Harrison pursued them. The Americans were the decided winners of the Battle of Thames. Tecumseh died in battle, and without his leadership, the indian confederation fell apart. -
Horseshoe Bend
America was fighting with Britain over the control of Lake Eerie. The battle of Lake Eerie was only one of the battles over the control of Lake Eerie. Andrew Jackson and the settlers won the battle. Since the Americans won. the Native Americans gave up their land to the Americans. Also during the Battle of Hoseshoe Bend, they were trying to break free of british rule. -
Washington D.C. Attacked and Burned
War in Europe was over, so Britain sent more of their toops to the United States. American troops met the British troops in Bladesburg, Maryland. The British were going to the capital. Dolley Madison gathered his stuff, and fled south. The British burnt down the White House and many other buildings in Washington D.C. -
Attack on Baltimore
British troops were in the capital. The President fled south. The british burnt down the White House, and a few other buildings. The British marched north to Baltimore. The war was raging that night at the harbor. After the battle, the American Flag was still visible at Fort McHenry. -
Writing of The Star Spengled Banner
After the Battle of Baltimore, the American flag was still standing. The British withdrew from the war. Francis Scott Key saw the whole battle, and wrote a poem about his seeings, the poem was later set to music, and made America's national anthem. -
Hartford Convention
The British Blockade hurt New England sea trade. Delegates from New England met in Hartford, Connecticut. They didnt like the republican president, because most of them were federalists. They all disliked the war. The delagates threatened the Hartford Convention that if the war didint stop then they would leave. Then a peace treaty was made. -
Treaty of Ghent
The Treaty of Ghent was signed in Ghent, Belgium. The treaty was summed up as, "nothing was adjusted, nothing was settled." Countries solved a fight between the U.S and Canada. People made the treaty because the delagates to the Hartford Convention threatened to leave the union if the war continued. They made the treaty and it ended the war, making the Hartford Convention useless. -
Battle of New Orleans
British soldiers marched toward the American Trenchers. c.2000 British soldiers were killed or injured by American troops (and cannons). While around 2000 British men were killer, only seven Americans died. American soldiers dug trenches to defend themselves and their fellow American soldiers. America won the Battle of New Orleans
