Had high tensioins with Britian were high. American sailors were being captured by Britain. War was wanted by many Americans. -
War Hawks Take Power
People such as Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun were eager with war with Britain. Most New Englanders opposed war with Britain because it would harm American trade. -
Relations with Great Britain Worsen
In early spring Britain told the United States that they would continue to impress American sailors. Northwest Native Americans attacked frontier settlements. -
Congress Declares War on Britain
Britain would not meet American demands to avoid war. The United States only had 16 warships and fewer than 7,000 men and was not ready to fight Britain. British ships set up a blockade in American ports. -

British have set up a blockade and the Americans can do anything. The United States has fewer that 7,000 men and 16 warships that were ready for action. -
Britain Blockades American Ports
Within the first few days of war the British had set up blockades near American ports. By wars end in 1814 all ports had blockades. The British used 135 warships to do this. -

The USS Constitution defeated the British Guerriere. -

Battle at Put-In-Bay in 1813. Won by Oliver Hazard Perry. It was a key battle in the war. The British defeat also forced them out of Detroit into Canada. -
Battle of Thames
Battle won under command of Gereral William Henry Harrison. The victory also pushed Natives and British back into Canada. Also killing Native leader Tecumseh. -
Battle of Horseshoe Bend
Battle won under Andrew Jackson. Faught with Native allies. The battle was faught in Alabama defeating the Creek Indians. -
Washington, D.C Attacked and Burned
Most govt. buildings were burned including the White House. Most Americans were shocked to find out that the army could not defend the White House. Dolley Madison saved her husbands papers form the Whitee House. -
Attack on Baltimore
British attack on Baltimore, Maryland that the Americans won. The British first attcked Ft. McHenry because it defended the port.
Also the night the national anthem was writen. -
Writing of the Star Spangled Banner
The day after the attack on Baltimore the nations national anthem was writen. Francis Scott Key wrote the nations national anthem which is still used today. Key wrote after he saw the American flag still flying over Baltimore after the previous night. -
Hartford Convention
Four federalist delegates that had decided to meet in Hartforf, CT. The metting was discussing if New England should secede from the United States. This was because all wars have badly damaged New England trade. -
Treaty of Ghent
Treaty signed by the British and Americans. Treaty was signed in Ghent, Belgium. The treaty was signed because Britiaan was tire dof war with the United States. -
Battle of New Orleans
Battle won by American General Andrew Jackson. The battle was fought before the treaty was heard of in the United States.
