President Madison Takes Office
Tension with Britain was high when Madison took office. Americans were angry because the British gave arming to the Native Americans. Americans also countinued impressment of American Saliors by the British. The country's honor was at stake. Then they felt a new sense of American nationalim which means pride in one's country. -
War Hawks Take Power
Clay, Calhuon, and thier supporters were called War Hawks, those who were eager for war with Britain. Many New Englanders Believed war would harm American trade. Also relations with Britain worsened by 1812 and were impressing sailors. The War Hawks went to Congress and told them "we have to go to war." The Congress declare war on Britain. -
Relations with Great Britain Worsen
The British started impressing sailors and wouldn't stop. The Congress wanted war to go on The British. Meanwhile the Native Americans were attacking the frontier. In June, Congress declared war on Britain. Then many New Englanders believed war with Britain would harm trade. -

Relations with Great Britain worsen in the early months of 1812. In spring, The British told the United States they would continue taking sailors. Meanwhile, Native Americans in the northwest began attacking frontier settlements. In June, Congress Declared war on Britain. The war started with a sea battle. -
America is not Ready for War
Americans soon discoved that winning the war would not be easy as declaring it. Many Americans welcome the news of war with Britain but, others were less happy adout it. The United States was not ready for war, so was the British. The American navy only had 16 war ships and the army was small and ill. The Congress voted to give $124 and360 acres of land for volunteers service. -
Britain Blockades American Ports
In the Frist day of war British sets up a blockade of the American Coust. A blackade is the action of shutting a port or road to prevent people or supplies from coming into an area or leaving it. By 1814, British navy had 135 warships blockading. The British were able to close off all American ports by war's end. Then there was a major sea battle, it was fought at the beginning of the war. -
Invasion of Cannada
American troops under Genral William Hull invaded Canada From Detroit. Hull was unsure of himself, he was faering that if he didn't have enough soldiers he would have to reteat. Bitish commader, General Isaac Brock, look advantage of HUl's confusion. General Isaac sent his British army and Native American warriors to surround Hull's army andForce to surreneder. The British captured about 2,000 American soliers, it was a serious defeat in the United States. -
USS Constition Scores a Victory
Isaac Hull was sailing near New Founded Land, he was the captain of the Constitution. Isaac Hull spotted the British ship, Guerriere. The guns on the Constitution roared into action tearing holes in the sides of Guerriere and shot both of its masts. The British Captain lowered his flag in surrender. American sea captains won the victories at sea, the victories cheered Americans, but did little to win the war. -
Battle of Lake Erie
Captain Oliver Hazard Perry's ship was battered by British and The British left it helpless. He took his flag down and went to another American ship. Where he raised his colors again and continued to fight. The Americans won the battle. Captain Perry worte his message which said: "We have meet the enemy and they are ours." -
Battle of Thames
Native Americans also suffered a defeat in the South. In the summer of 1813, Creek warrior attacked several southern American settements. Andrew Jackson took command of American forces in Georgia. In March 1814, Jackson defeated the Creeks at the Battle of Horoeshoe Bend. The treaty that ended the fighting forced the Creeks to give up millions of acres of land. -

Washington, D.C. Attacked and Burned
British ships sailed into Chesapeake Bay, about 30 miles away from Washington, D.C. American troops met the British in Bladenspurg. President Madison watched the battle and was dismay that the british won. The British went Further to the Capital. Dolly Madison left the White House with some important papers and a portrait of George Washington. -
Attack on Baltimore
The British frist objective was Fort Mctlenry which defended the city's harbor. Francis Scot Key, a young American, watch the attack. At dawn, Key was that the American flag was still flying over the fort. The Americans had beaten off the British's attack. -
Writing of the Star Spangled Banner
Francis Scott Key watch the attack. Key saw the American flag still flying over the fort. The Americans beaten off the attack. On the back of an old envelope Key wrote a peom called "The Star Spangled Banner". It told the story of his night watch, it became popular and was set to music. -
Hartfort Conention
The Hartford Corvent is the group of Federalists. Some delegates to the Hatford Corvention suggest that the New Egland states with draw from the United States. While the war over, Hartford Covention quickly ended. The war of 1812 was the "Second War of Independence." -
Treaty of Ghent
By 1814, Britain was tied of war. Pearce Talks began in Ghent (gehnt) Balgium. On Chritmas Eve 1814, the two sides signed the Treaty of Ghent. The treaty ended the war. The treaty returned every thing to the way they were. -
Battle of New Orleans
The British attacked again and again, British soldiers marched toward the Acerican trenches.More then 2,000 British soldiers died. Only 7 American troopers died.Andrew Jackson become a national hero. The Americans had won the Battle of New Orleans.
