In 1810 Henry Clay of Kentuky and John C. Calhoun of south Carolina,became leaders in the House of Representatives.Clay ,Calhoun,and their supporters were called war hawks.War hawks were people who wanted to start war with Britain.Many New England people belived war with Britain would harm American trade. -
Relations with Great Britain Worsen
Relations with Britain kept getting worse in the early months of 1812.In spring the British kept telling the United States that they would keep impressing sailors.In the Northwest Native Americans began attacking fronteir settlements.In June,congress declared war. -
America is not Ready for War
In June 1812 the united states was not ready for war.Jeffersons spending cuts had weaked American military.The Army only had 16 warships and less than 2,000 men. -
Congress Declares War on Britain
In June 1812 Congress declared a war.The war did not come at a good time for the British because they were still at war with Europe.Britain was not willing to meet American demands to avoid the war.When the war started, Americans were sure that they were going to win. -
Britain Blockades American Ports

Battle of Lake Erie
In september of 1813 The Battle of Lake Erie took place.The American forces hhad better luvk at this battle.During this battle, the American flagship was badly damaged.The American commander Oliver Hazard Perry switched to a different ship and continued the fight until he won.When Perry won he announced his victory very dramaticlly.He said,"We have met the enemy and they are ours."Since the Amearicans had control of the lake the British were forced to leave Detroit and retreat back to Canada. -

On October 1813 the Battle of Thames took place.The Native Americans followed the British into Canada, defeating them in the battle.Many people got killed and one of them were Tecumseh. -
