  • President Madison Takes Office

    When Madison took office in 1809, we(Britain and America) were angry at each other because of their impressment of sailers and our embargo against them. Thus there was a high amount of Nationalism, so our country urged the president/congress to go to war with Britain.
  • War Hawks Take Power

    At the same time, Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun were the strongist nationalists and formed a group called the war hawks, supporters of war against britain and many congressmen were with them.

  • Relations With Britain Worsen

    Relations got worse when Britain continued impressing soldiers and were arming native americans to stop westward expansion and invasion of canada
  • Congress Declares war

    We finally asked for a stop or war. we asked for impressment to stop, to stay neutral and trade with both British and France. When these needs were not given, we declared war.
  • America is not ready for war.

    With the changes Jefferson made to the government, we had low military budgets, thus we had a military of less than 7,000 men and only 16 warships! The war came quickly and we still were not ready.
  • Britain Blockades American ports

    In the first days of the war the British Blockaded American ports on the east coast. 135 warships blocked ports in this area so fighting back would be futile for the 16 warships America had.
  • Invasion of Canada

    War Hawks wanted to invade Canada Before the war began. General William Hull invaded Canada from Detroit. Fearing he did not have enough men he retreated, but were attacked by British on the way. On the Erie Oliver Hazard Perry had battled in the west side of the lake, and, flagship damaged, moved to another ship and continued the battle until the day was won.
  • USS Constitution Scores a victory

    This was the most famous sea battle of the war. The USS Constitution engaged the British frigate the Guerriere for a full hour. The Constitution had reinforced sides and wasnt heavily damage, but took down the Guerriere.
  • Second Battle of Sackets Harbor

    British forces tryed to capture the town, because it had a dock and fort. Their attempt was stopped by American soldiers and militia. British casualties: 1 officer, 47 men, 12 officers and 183 wounded. America: 30 killed, 200 wounded.
  • Battle of lake Erie

    This battle drove the British out of Detroit. Since this lake was close to Canada/America it was important in the war for both of us. Oliver Hazard Perry commanded the americans to victory, even though the flagship was almost destroyed.
  • Battle of Thames

    After the battle of lake Erie, the British retreated, but were pursued by General William Henry Harrison, who defeated them and the Natives in the battle, and also killed Tecumseh, leader of the western revolts.
  • Battle of Horseshoe Bend

    Natives suffered the loss of their leader, But still wanted revenge. We battled their creek warriors in the battle of horseshoe Bend with that we signed a treaty with them only if they gave us their land, which is millions of acres.
  • Battle of fort Oswego

    In this battle the british attacked and Destroyed(damaged) the american fort, but they were driven back. this fort was later rebuilt and was later used as a museum
