    The end of the Viking Age
    In 1066, England was back under the control of the Anglo-Saxons. King Harald Hardrada attempted to invade northern England but was killed by England's King Harold Godwinson. Three weeks later, the English king himself was killed in battle by William, who later became known as William the Conqueror. The death of King Harald Hardrada stated the loss of power that the Vikings had held over western Europe for almost three centuries. Harald's death is considered the end of the viking age
