Vietnamese Independence League
Ho Chi Minh, a communist and the leader of a group called the "Viet Minh" were created to unify Vietnam. "Our people has suffered a double burden." Says Ho Chi Minh. He refers to the French and Japanese. They set up camp in China to stay under the radar. -
The French and Japanese
In the fall of 1941, The French would have a love-hate relationship with the Japanese. The Japanese would also control parts of Indochina as well. Now Vietnam suffered two nations. -
Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor
Around 1942, Japan started to become a dominant nation. The attack on Pearl Harbor would create awareness through other nations especially the U.S. The Japanese controlled most of Indochina except for India and parts of China. -
Target: Japanese Army
The British and the Americans would organize local tribes in Vietnam behind Japanese lines as a warfare tactic. Americans send men from the OSS to train people. A group supplied Hoi Chi Minh with weapons and training as well, powerful nations desired the Japanese to crumble. This would be a perfect opportunity for the Vietming to rise. -
North Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh claimed independence when the Japanese fell. He called Indochina the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV). -
Beginning of the Indochina War
As the French came back to rule, Northern Vietnam or (DRV Democratic Replublic of Vietnam) offered some deals with the French that didn't go too well. The French would ignite the fire by bombing Haiphong killing six thousand civilians. -
Retaliation
Vietnam would not back down as they attacked the French in Hanoi. -
America joins the Party
France offers the Elysee agreement which put Bao Dai as a Vietnamese emperor of a non-communist state to the U.S in return for help. America would send war advisors to help the French. From 1950-1952 the French would still suffer from the Vietming because of the Guerilla warfare. -
Soviet Union and China Supports
Because of the success of the Vietming, the North got support from the Soviet Union as well as China. -
French Defeat
The French would be defeated even though the U.S sent some forces to help them. The Vietming defeat the French at Dien Bien Phu.
