The French Indchina war came to an end and the Geneva Accords were signed to have Vietnam divided by the 17th parallel. The North section of Vietnam was lead by Hochi Minh a communist backed by Soviet Russia, and China. The South was soon lead by Ngo Dinh Diem and backed by the United States and the Philippines.. -

Ngo Dinh Diem, an anti-communist opposes the elections and appoints himself as president of the Republic of Vietnam. He immediately gets recognition from the United States and they begin to send supplies and training to the South. -
