  • Missouri Compromise

    Added a line. Territories below the line would become slave and territories above the line would become free states.
  • Wilmount Proviso

    A failed proposition to make all land taken from Mexico free states.

    This just made California a free state and New Mexico did as well. This act banned slavery from Washington, D.C.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Required all slaves who were found to have run away to be returned to thier masters. This greatly angered the North.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Written by Harriet Tubman, a freed slave, the novel describes slavery and made many people in the North hate slavery even more.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This bill allowed states to decide for themselves whether or not it wanted to be a slave or free state. One of many outrages that led to the Civil War.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    The slave Dred Scott went to court to earn his freedom from Irene. He had been taken into free land earlier which many poeple thought made him a free man.

    Douglas was against slavery, however he believed in state's choice. Lincoln wanted to unite the country again and knew turmoil would follow with a divided house.

    Raid on Harper's Ferry

    Abolitionist John Brown took a force of 21 men and stormed an engine house in Harper's Ferry. While most of his men were killed by forces from Robert E. Lee, some escaped with many slaves. John Brown was tried and executed after he was arrested.
  • Lincoln Elected 16th President of the U.S.

    This caused the South to secede for they feared they would lose the right to slavery.
  • South Secedes

    South Carolina was the first state to fully secede. It didn't want to be part of an abolitionist country, much less the U.S. This caused Lincoln to take action and begin the Civil War
