The steam engine

  • Birth of the steam engine

    Birth of the steam engine
In 1698, Thomas Savery, an engineer, and inventor patented the machine that could effectively draw water from flooded mines using steam pressure, thus giving it the name steam engine.
  • Newcomen atmospheric engine

    Newcomen atmospheric engine
The atmospheric engine was invented by Thomas Newcomen in 1712. The engine was operated by condensing steam drawn into the cylinder, thereby creating a partial vacuum which allowed the atmospheric pressure to push the piston into the cylinder. It was the first practical device to harness steam to produce mechanical work.
  • The modernization

    The modernization
James watt realized was to cause the steam to condense in a separate cylinder apart from the piston. James also realized that the engine would need to maintain the temperature of the cylinder at the same temperature as the injected steam by surrounding it with a steam jacket.
  • Practicalization of the steam engine

    Practicalization of the steam engine
With the new advancements watt made, the steam engine became much more practical and was used for things like steam trains and pumping water out of mines
  • Steamships and railroads

    Steamships and railroads
The railroads have been finished and it brings on new business as well the first-ever steamSHIP is created
