A year before the British attacked, Mrs. Pickersgill was hired to sew a huge flag, 30 feet high and 42 feet wide. With the help of her 13 year old daughter, she sewed the flag in a brewery where there was enough room for it. -

While the War of 1812 was in progress in Canada, IN Europe, the British defeated Napolean. They could now focus their energy on the United States. Biritsh attacked Washington, D.C. to get revenge on the United States for burning the capital of Canada. -
Americans Win the War
Mr. Key looked through a telescope at dawn and saw the huge American Flag waving overing Fort McHenry. He then wrote a poe in which he published a few days later, entitled "The Defense of Fort McHenry." These words set to music was later known as the national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." -
British Prepare to Attack Baltimore
Francis Scott Key and John Skinner, who were in charge of prisoner exchanges, sailed up to the Britisb fleet in a small boat and requested they release Dr. William Beanes because he was not a soldier. The British agreed to release him but required that 3 Americans stay on a British ship until they had finished attacking Baltimore. -
