Cuban Revolution Begins
July 26th, 1895: The Cuban revolution begins. Cuba wanted independence from Spain and self-determination after four centuries of Spanish control. Their cause received support from the US. -
USS Maine is Sunk
February 15th, 1898: The USS Maine is sunk by suspected Spanish forces in Havana Harbor. The ship sank due to a mysterious explosion, killing 269 Americans. This was seen as a direct attack from Spain against the US. The US took this as an opportunity to officially get involved in the war to not only help Cuba’s cause but to also hopefully be able to expand US territory. -
War is Declared
April 25th, 1898: The US declares war on Spain after the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor. This meant the fight against Spanish colonization was now a team effort between Cuba and the US. Many Cubans saw US involvement as an opportunity to tip the scale of power towards them, while other Cubans were worried about alternative motives from the US. -
First Battle Takes Place
May 1st, 1898: A direct battle between Spanish and US naval forces for the first time took place in Manila Bay in the Philippines. It was the first battle of the war and a decisive US victory. This battle was a symbol of US strength and commitment to Cuba. -
Last Battle Begins with an Invasion
July 1st, 1898: American troops land in southern Cuba to invade the island. This begins the attempt to capture Santiago de Cuba, a major port city that would give the US access to the Spanish fleet. When they land, they meet with the Cuban revolutionists. Two days later, US Navy defeats the Spanish Navy at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. After this battle, Spanish Navy is no longer able to fight because of a lack of resources, loss of ships, demoralization, and other factors. -
Treaty of Paris is Signed
December 10th, 1898: The Treaty of Paris is signed. This treaty officially ends the war and transferred control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines from Spain to the US. This meant Spain lost all its major overseas territories to the US.
