Started
This all started on August 2nd 1955 when the Soviet Union responded to the U.S saying they were going to launch artifical satellites. The Soviet Union beat the U.S to this. -
First Lanch
The first launch was by the Soviet Union on October 4th 1957. They named this the sputnik 1. -
Sputnik 2
Carrying a dog this went into space. The dog that was in it was named Laika. Sputnik 2 remained in orbit until April 13 1958. -
Explorer 1
This went into space January 31 1958. This was the first satellite launched by the U.S. This discovered the Earth's radiation belt. -
Sputnik 3
The Sputnik 3 was launched on March 17 1958. This is the only human made satellite that reamained in orbit until April 6 1960. -
NASA
NASA was founded on this date. NASA means National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Their first project was to try to get humans into space. -
Pioneer 1
Pioneer 1 was the first satellite launched by NASA. This was the first satellite launched by NASA not the U.S. This never did reach the moon do to a malfunction during the time of launching! -
Apollo 7
This was the first staffed mission. There were three men that were apart of this. This only orbited the earth one time. -
First Humans on The Moon
The U.S. landed the first humans on earth in 1969. They landed them on the moon with the Apollo 11. Neils Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were aboard this to land on the moon! -
Syncronous Meterological Satellite
This was carried into orbit by the Delta 2914. This is like a satellite that tracks storms and weather. -
Pioneer 11
In 1979 Pioneer 11 reached Saturn. It got within 13,000 miles of it. And it took some very good pictures from being within 13,000 miles of saturn. -
The third space shuttle
The thrid space shuttle took off in 1984. It took off to its maiden voyage. This was going to display 3 communication satellites. -
The Challenger
The challenger was supposed to carry some satellites into space. There was a huge disaster. This broke apart in 69 seconds. -
STS-31
This deployed The Hubble Space Telescope. -
The Space Race Ended
The Space Race Ended around 1991. This is when the space race ended. The USA lost, but we got to the moon first.
