    Engineers.
    Engineers have improved technology during years, they have improved rockets and they have improved capsules, one of the most significant engineers of all times was Sergei Korolev, he is regarded as the father of practical astronautics, he also was involved in the development of the R-7 Rocket, the Sputnik 1, and the launch of Laika and Yuri Gagarin. He was arrested on a false official charge as a "member of an anti-Soviet counter-revolutionary organization" in 1938.

    The space race began. It was a fight between two nations to conquer, explore and send humans to space. The space race has contributed to humanity in technological advances.

    The first succesful launch was the one that put in orbit the artificial satellite Sputnik 1.

    There have been animals in space, but some haven´t survived, this is the story of Laika, a dog who became the first living being in space aboard the ship Sputnik 2, unfortunately the dog died in space.

    There have been women in space too. The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova launched into space on the Vostok 6.

    Unfortunately many disasters have happened in space during launches and many people haven´t survived. In 1967 the crew of the first crewed Apollo mission, Virgil Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee were killed in a fire that swept throught their spacecraft cabin during a ground test.

    The Soviet Union wasn´t the first nation to send a man to the Moon. Americans achieved the first Moon landing in the mission Apollo 11. The astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin were the first humans in the Moon. The Moon landing have become one of the greatest achievements in history.
