Bad times in Virginia - The Starving Time 1609-1610
Almost everyone in the Jamestown Colony died from starvation diseases. Settlers were forced to eat snakes, vipers, rats, mice, musk turtles, cats, dogs, horses, and perhaps even raptors. In addition, multiple gruesome stories suggest, and archaeological evidence has partially corroborated, that settlers devoured each other. -
Good Times in VA - Here comes Tobacco
Tobacco Farming Begins in VA 1619
Beginning in 1619 the General Assembly put in place requirements for the inspection of tobacco and mandated the creation of port towns and warehouses. This system assisted in the development of major settlements at Norfolk, Alexandria, and Richmond. -

In 1649, Maryland passed the Toleration Act, which gave religious freedom to all Christians in the colony. Over time, many members of the Anglican Church settled in Maryland. In 1702, it became the colony's official church. -
A Great Time for Establishing Maryland
By 1634, Maryland became one of the few territories of England to be predominately Catholic. Their settlement became known as St. Mary’s and is currently the fourth oldest permanent British settlement in America. -

The Colony of South Carolina
South Carolina, part of the original Province of Carolina, was founded in 1663 when King Charles II gave the land to eight noble men known as The Lords Proprietors. At the time, the province included both North Carolina and South Carolina. North and South Carolina became separate royal colonies in 1729. -

The Colony of Georgia
In 1732, James Oglethorpe received a royal charter for the Province of Georgia. It was named after King George II. Oglethorpe imagined the area as a refuge for England’s poor people, who were crowded together in debtor’s prisons.
