Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov
Vladimir was born in Simbirsk Russia, close to St. Petersburg. As a student, education was very important to him. He studied law and revolutionary literature but was expelled from college for taking part in a political demonstration.
Historians believe that he wanted to call himself "Lenin" in reference to the Lena River in Siberia.

Lenin’s brother is executed
At the age of 17, Aleksander Ulyanov was arrested in St. Petersburg for plotting against Tsar Alexander III. In 1881, the mysterious Executive Committee of the Narodnaya Volya, succeeded in assassinating Alexander II. Alexander was then convicted and hanged.

Lenin's arrest for plotting against the Tzar
Lenin spent a year in St. Petersburg jail and then banished to Siberia for plotting against the Tzar. While in exile, he married Nadezhda Krupskaya. He also wrote his first book – The Development of Capitalism in Russia. After his exile ended in 1900, Lenin left Russia for Western Europe.

Lenin returns to Russia
Lenin returned to Russia during the Russian Revolution and is elected to the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party leadership Two years later he did not see a potential for upheveal so he left Russia again for exile in Europe.

Lenin returns to Russia (again)
Lenin returns to Russia from Europe afterTsar Nicholas II resigned. On his trip back to Russia he wrote the April Thesis, arguing that Bolsheviks should not settle with the February 1917 revolution, and should fight for a better socialist revolution.

Lenin leads second Russian Revolution from November 6-8th
Lenin leads the overthrow of the Russian Provisional Government and the battle for the Winter Palace in St Petersburg. He first consolidates the Bolshevik Party’s initial hold on power, and then secures the revolution in the Russian Civil War.

New Economic Policy
After the war, the economy was slowing down so Lenin signed a decree introducing the New Economic Policy, which allowed small businesses to once again operate and make profits in the Soviet Union.

Lenin suffers from multiple strokes
Lenin sufferd his first stroke in May which left him partially paralyzed, second in December, and third in March of the following year.

Lenin death
Lenin had a heart attack and died. Stalin took over as the Soviet Union's leader. Petrograd (St.Petersburg before) was now re-named Leningrad in honor of Lenin, the first Soviet Union's leader. Lenin’s body was preserved, and today he is still on display at the Lenin Mausoleum, in Red Square, Moscow.
