    Decemberist Revolt
    -Nobles tried to overthrow the Czar government; they wanted a constitutional monarchy
    -Czar Nicholas II quickly crushed the uprising, he executed 5 leaders and exiled 100's more to Siberia
    -He banned books from the West that might contain liberal ideas
    -He also sent secret poleice to spy on teachers and students
    -Peoples loyalty to the Czar faultered
  • Nicholas II becomes Czar of Russia

    Nicholas II becomes Czar of Russia
    -Czar Nicholas II was the last czar of the Russian Empire under Romanov rule
    -His poor handeling of Bloddy Sunday lead to his abdication and execcution
    -Nicholas inhearited the thrown when his father died of a kideny disease

    -The Russo Janapnese War was fought between the Japanese empire and the Russian empire over imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea

    -Riots and strikes sweapt the cites, in the countryside peasents looted and burned the names of land owners; these protests were lead by Greagory Gapen
    -Poleice fired on these protesters killing over 100; Though Nicholas did not order to start fire the gained the nickname Bloody Nicholas
    -Czar Nicholas agreed to set up and eleted assembly called the Duma to make minor reforms

    -Military disasters greatly weakended the Russian army in the initail phase of war
    -The growing influence of Rasputin over the Romanov's, who have ruled Russia for 300 years, were no longer in charge of Russia, that had been taken over by the provisonal government
    -By the end of 1917 Lenin and the Bolsheveviks had taken power in the major cities in Ruissa and had intoduced communist rule

    The March Revolution
    -The first World War had cost millions of people their lives and those not fighting faces serious food shortages; this winter was very cold and fuel was in short supply
    -Workers in the city demanded a 50% wage increase so they could buy food and when they didnt get it they went on strike
    -30,000 workers were now locked out of work, they wernt paid so they couldn't buy food. These workers convinced other workers to go on strike as well

    Czar Nicholas abdicates the throne
    -riots and strikes erupted protesting the war and demanding socialist reforms, and Czar Nicholas was forced to abdicate the throne.
    -Bolsheviks arrest Nicholas
    -Nicholas and his family were sent to be executed; this was the end of Czarest rule
    -The Duma set up the provisional government; this introduced reformes such as freedom of speech and religion

    1918-1921 Russian Civil War
    -This was a multi-party war in the former Russian empire; this war took place because many of the groups formemd opposed Lenins Bolsheviks
    -It was a war faught between the Whites and the Reds
    -The communists were better organized than the opposing groups which were deeply divided
    -The Bolsheviks took anything they needed to build their army
    -Communists won control over most of hte old russian empire and re-named the county the Soviet Union

    Vladimir Lenins death
    -The creator of the Bolshevik revolution and the leader of the Soviet Union dies of a brain hemerage at the age of 54
    -Earlier in life he was aressted and exiled to Siberia
    -After his dealth his body was embalmed and placed in a mausoleum near the Moscow kremlin.
