A small group of army officers tried to overthrow the czar’s government in December. They had hoped to set up a constitutional monarchy. Nicholas had crushed the uprising. He executed 5 leaders and sent hundreds more to siberia. -

Alexander II changed Russia by ending serfdom. Russian serfs were similar to slaves in the United States, but were finally freed. -
Nicholas II becomes czar of Russi
His father had died so he had taken over the role of czar which he was totally unprepared for. He took the throne at age 26. -
The Russo-Japanese War
The Russian and Japanese began fighting in Korea and Manchuria in 1900 which led to war by February 1904. The Japanese won most of the battles. They agreed to stop fighting in September 1905 in a conference hosted by Theodore Roosevelt.he war was a disaster for Russia.The humiliating defeats weakened the Nicholas authority and set off a revolution that contributed to the eventual triumph of the Bolsheviks a dozen years later. After the February Revolution, Kerensky became the second Prime Minister until it was overthrown by the Bolsheviks in the October Revolution. -

The Winter Palace is where the Provisional government was located. It was taken over by armed forces and started the Russian Civil War. -
the March Revolution
Riots had broken out in Petrograd. The peasants were chanting, “Land, Peace, and Bread. “ Nicholas’s workers had disobeyed him which made him abdicate the throne. And the provisional government assumes power. -
Nicholas II and his family are executed
They were brought into the basement of where they were living at the time because they thought they were taking a family picture. Then all of them were shot and killed. There bodies were covered in acid to make them not smell or rotting. There was a memorial made but many people had disrespected it . -
Russian civil war
The bolschviks (Reds) were communists that were led by Leon Trotsky and Lenin. They were a powerful army who had support from peasants. The whites were the upper and middle class supporters of Provisional or czarist Russia. They had support from USA, and Britaian for lots of money. The communists had won. It went until 1922. -
Vladimir Lenin dies and Josef Stalin becomes leader of the Soviet Union
Lenin died of series of strokes. His tomb lies in Moscow. St. Petersburg was renamed Leningrad in 1924
