    The northern and southern politicians have debates over the growth of slavery. The debate was settled by Henry Clay. The Missouri compromise were a series of laws that helped maintain the balance between slave states and free states.

    Southern states felt the tariffs were unfair and only supported the north. John Calhoun stated that any state could nullify a federal law it considers unconstitutional. When the federal government denied soth carolinas argument they threatened to secede. Henry Clay came up with a compromise and lowered the tariff.

    Congress had many debates about if the new states won from Mexico would be free or slave states. Henry clay made another compromise. California would be a free state. Congress would not pass laws banning slavery from the rest of the new territories.

    This act allowed African Americans to be captured who had fled to the north to escape slavery. These laws heightened tension and set the stage for John Brown's raid and the American civil war.

    5000 people in Missouri voted for proslavery representatives in Kansas illegally. Anti slavery opponents started their own government which was later attacked by proslavery forces. John Brown murdered 5 of his men to avenge the attack.

    Dred Scott was a slave that sued for his freedom. The court ruled that he was not free and that African Americans were not citizens.

    John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown wanted slaves to fight for their freedom. He wanted to capture arsenal to arm the slaves. Abolitionists saluted John as he was put to death and the issue of slavery raised tensions to the breaking point in America.

    Abraham Lincoln wins the election. Southern states begin to secede from the Union shortly after Lioncolm is elected.
