    The Nullification Crisis
    Due to the passing of tariffs laws of 1828 to 1832 southern states like south Carolina felt that tariffs were unfair and only supported the north. Vice President John C. Calhoun said Amy state could nullify a federal law it considers unconstitutional the federal government denied South Carolina argument. South Carolina threaded to secede. Henry clay came up with a compromise and lowered the tarrif.

    After the war with Mexico congress had ,any heated debates. The new territories won from mexico would be admitted as slave states or free slaves. Henry clay helped make a compromise between north and south. California would be admitted as a free state and slave state would be abolished. Congress would not pass laws banning slavery from the rest of the territories.

    5000 people from nearby proslavery Missouri come and voted for proslavery representitves in Kansas illegally. Anti slavery government was attacked by proslavery forces. To average this attack extreme abolitionist John Brown murdered several of his proslavery neighbors.

    Dred Scott was a slave, he sued for freedom. He argued that because he lived in a free territory that he should have beem emancipated.The court had an declared he wasn't free based on his residence in Illinois an Wisconsin. African Americas were not considered citizens when constitution was declared. Dred Scott was his owners property, an proberty could not be taken away.

    Harpes Ferry wanted to inspire slaves to fight for there freedom. it was planned to capture the arsenal, at the army base in Harpes Ferry, Virginia to arm the slave. Brown sent the word to rally the slaves to join him but none followed. Browns & his men were captured & 10 killed. Abolitionists saluted John Brown as he was put to death. The issue raised tension in America to the breaking point.

    Abraham Lincoln wins the election, despite the statements that he would do nothing to abolish slavery in the south. Southern state don't trust him. southern states begin to secede from the Union shortly after Lincoln is elected
