  • Start of Pontiac´s Rebellion

    Native Americans dissatisfied with British rule, so an Ottawan leader named Pontiac led a rebellion. Tribes: Ottawa, Ojibwa, Shawnee, Miami, Huron, Seneca & Potawatomi. The rebellion lasted for 3 years. Frontier forts were attacked and Native Americans would trick settlers to gain access to forts, and then capture or kill inhabitants.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    Tax on importing sugar (molasses), wine, and coffee. There was already a Molasses Tax (1633). The Sugar Tax was only half of the Molasses Tax but the colonists did not want to pay it. This was because the Parliament passed the Sugar Tax to counter smuggling of foreign goods and to establish British monopoly in the American sugar market. This act allowed royals to seize cargo with little or no legal cause. The Sugar Act was designed to beneift the British at the expense of American colonists.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    Colonists had to supply British troops with living quarters, bedding, food, beer, cider, and rum.
    Cause: Most soldiers were housed in public buldings but when they were away from the city they had to stay in people´s homes.
    Outcome: The colonists were furious, They thought that this was a time of peace, not war, and they wanted the soldiers to be taken away. They thought that this was another attempt to limit their freedom. They refused to comply.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    This required a stamp tax on all legal documents, newspapers, pamphlets, playing cards, dice, and other printed material. Any violators of this act would be tried by the Admiralty Courts. The tax only affected a small percentage of the Colonists population and only affected the rich and educated.
    Reason: the British wanted to raise revenue
    Outcome: the colonists were not happy with this, and they burned tax collectors in public view and tarred and feathered them.
  • The Virginia Resolves

    The Virginia Resolves
    The previous Stamp Act generated the first wave of significant resistance against British rule. Because of this, the Virginia House of Burgesses passed the Virginia Resolve, which denied Parliament´s right to tax the colonists using the Stamp Tax. By the end of the year, 8 other colonial legislatures did the same thing.
  • Parliament Withdraws the Stamp Act

    Under strong pressure from the colonists, and with their economy slumping because of the boycott of British goods, Parliament finally withdrew the Stamp Act.
  • Pontiac Signs Treaty

    Pontiac Signs Treaty
    The diplomatic solution to the rebellion problem was to have Pontiac sign a treaty. However, Pontiac did not see this treaty as surrender.
