    South didn't like tariffs so Calhoun made the nullification crisis then South Carolina was denied their argument and threatened to secede . Clay then sme up with a comprimise and lowered tariffs.

    Congress debated if the new states would be free or slave and Henry Clay made another compromise. Cali is admitted as free and congress couldn't pass laws banning slavery from the rest of the territories.

    Passed by congress to permit capture of AA who fled north to escape bondage. These laws caused tension and set the stage for Brown's raid and the Civil War
  • Bleeding Kansas

    5000 people from proslavery Missouri voted for proslavery reps in Kansas illegally. Anti-slave opponents then started their own government. They were then attacked by the proslavery government. Then Brown murdered 5 of his proslavery neighbors.

    Scott was a free slave and sued for his freedom. He was ruled not free and the court also declared the Missouri Compromise of 1820 unconstitutional.

    Brown wanted to inspire slaves and planned to capture the arsenal but they were captured. Abolitionist saluted Brown as he was put to death. This raised tensions about slavery to a breaking point.
