The Rise of Sectionalism
-
Louisiana Purchase
Sectionalism occurred because the west made the U.S. twice the size it had been before the purchase. When the territories became states they had to decide whether they would come into the Union as a slave state or a free state. The U.S. was now the Northern states, Southern states, and Western states. -
Congress Abolishes Slavery
Congress created an Act of Abolishing Slave Importation around 1807 but it was never really enacted until 1808. Even though importation was now abolished the expansion of slaves still continued. The South wanted slave owning to be legal especially after the cotton boom. The North thought that slavery should be abolished overall and that it defeated the purpose of them fighting for freedom of rights of men yet when owning slaves. The West began to lean towards the Souths opinion as well. -
Hartford Convention
The Hartford Convention was a series of meetings from Dec. 15, 1814 to Jan. 5, 1815 in Hartford Connecticut. Where New England Federalist met to discuss their concerns in the War of 1812 and the federalist party. They wanted to remove the 3/5 compromise, declarations of war, and laws restricting trade. Federalists also discussed their issues with the Louisiana Purchase and Embargo act. News of Andrew Jackson's victory in New Orleans swept over the Northeast, eliminating a major political force. -
Banking
In 1818 banks began to pursue an easy-credit policy which caused land sales to increase. The West wanted cheap land sales so that they could expand their farming easily. The North and South disagreed and thought that the land should cost a lot of money. The North was afraid that cheap lands would cause all of their factory labor workers to leave and pursue a better life in farming. The South was afraid of the competition that could occur when the cheap lands were used to make cotton. -
Missouri Compromise
To not upset the balance of power Henry Clay proposed that Maine would be a free state and Missouri a slave state, and that land north of the 36' 30' line would be "free" land. This compromise created a temporary bandage between the Union. During this time, the sectionalism between the North and South was increasing. The issue of expansion of slavery was tearing apart the country. It angered the North. While the South viewed it as not morally wrong, and would do anything to continue slavery. -
The Election of 1824
The United States presidential election of 1824 was the tenth quadrennial presidential election, held from October 26, to December 2, 1824. John Quincy Adams was elected President on February 9, 1825. -
Tariff of Abominations
The Tariff of Abominations was denoted by Southern States. It was designed to protect the American economy, the North believed it would cripple the Southern economy. Until it was repealed in 1833 after the Nullification Crisis in South Carolina, led by John C. Calhoun. The tariff put a tax on goods imported from Britain. In order to raise the prices of these goods to be the same price as the U.S. was selling them for. -
Civil War Begins
Sectionalism was the main component in the Civi War. Because when the South seceded from the Union, the Civil War was fought over weither or not this would be permanent. And after the Confederates went against what Lincoln had said about succeeding being illegal. They seized most federal property in the South, but the Union still had hold of Fort Sumter. And with no thought of surrendering, the first battle of the war was fought at Fort Sumter. -
Civil War Ends
The battle of the states lasted for 4 years. The eleven states that succeeded from the Union , wanted to become the Confederate States of America. This resulted in the Civil War, which ended with the Union winning. Along with all of the states being apart of the Union again, the largest result was that slavery abolished. And with the end of the Civil War, it was also the end to sectionalism in America
