Atari 5200 is born!
To protect it's stronghold on the home console market, Atari developed the 5200. However, due to a lack of system specific games, with their focus on the 2600 and its games, which could be played on the 5200, this system was a flop. -
Atari Misses The Boat On The NES
Atari had already previously released Nintendo games for the Atari 2600, but Nintendo was looking for a deal where they would be the sole supplier of all parts and internals and Atari being allowed to simply design the case and put their name on it. However, it had to be ready for Christmas 1983 and with their big company players either leaving the company or on vacation, there was no way it would be ready. Nintendo heads decided to go it alone, and the rest is history. -
Atari 7800 is born!
With the market becoming saturated and new owners losing faith in their product, the 7800 was kind of a last ditch effort to compete with the likes of Nintendo and Sega, but due to cancellations and a lack of financial backing from new owners, the 7800 was just as big of a flop as the Atari 5200. -
Atari Jaguar is born!
The Atari Jaguar, the company's last attempt at having success in the console market, debuts. While sporting some nice peripherals, it suffered from a lack of exclusive content and solid commercial promotion. This would be the last time Atari would be in the console market. -
Atari Goes Bankrupt!
After years of commercial struggles, including a hard hit French market, Atari files for Chapter 11, hoping to sell off some of their franchises. While its stand on the US market isn't as bad as it is internationally, this gaming icon goes quietly into the night.
