Sam Houston takes command of the troops at Gonzales following the fall of the Alamo. He decided to retreat to the Colorado River, and sent couriers to the inhabitants of Anglo-Texas. This mass exodus became known as the Runaway Scrape.

The United States recognizes the Republic of Texas
United States President Andrew Jackson signs a resolution and appoints "Alcée Louis La Branche of Louisiana to be chargé d'affaires to the Republic of Texas." (Nance, 2019) This marked the United States official recognition of Texas as independent.

The Naval Battle of Campeche
During Texas' war with Mexico, this iconic battle was a Texas victory wherein Texas defeated the superior, steam-powered Mexican navy with only two wind-powered ships, and help from a "fishing boat navy" from Yucatan. (Texas Navy Association)

Anson Jones as President

Texas is annexed as a state
President Jones called for a convention which met in July of 1845. At this convention, it was agreed upon to accept the annexation. This meeting also resulted in the Constitution of 1845, which was to be submitted to the United States for approval. Both the constitution and the annexation were approved by the convention on October 13. When the US Congress approved the constitution. Polk signed the admission act, and Texas became the 28th state on December 29, 1845. (Nance, 2019)
