  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri compromise was created by Henry Clay to create a temporary compromise to balance the power between slave and free states. It admitted Missouri as a Slave State, Maine as a Free State, and made all territories above the 30 36 line free and below slave.
  • The Nullification Crisis

    The Nullification Crisis
    Southern States such as South Carolina felt tariffs that were passed in 1832 were unfair as they only supported the North. Vice President John C. Calhoun said a state can nullify the tariff. When South Carolina did try to nullify it they were denied. So SC threatened to secede. Henry Clay came up with a compromise.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    After the Mexican War, Congress had many debates on whether the new land would be slave states or free states. So Henry Clay said that California will be admitted as a free state, slave trade will be stopped in DC, and Congress would not pass laws banning slavery from the rest of the territories gained from the war.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1850 by Congress. It allowed the capture of all African Americans that fled to the North. They increased tensions and led to John Brown's attacks and the Civil War.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    5,000 people from pro slavery states came to vote for slavery in Kansas, making slavery legal.As a result all of the anti-slavery people started their own government. They were attacked by pro-slavery groups. To avenge the attack John Brown murdered several pro=slavery neighbors.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. He said that he should be free since he was living in a free territory. The court decided that he would stay a slave because he was property and could not be taken away without due process of law.
  • Attack on Harper's Ferry

    Attack on Harper's Ferry
    John Brown captured an arsenal in Virginia. He planned to arm the slaves of Virginia and start a rebellion, but no slaves came and he was captured. Abolitionists treated him a a martyr an the issue of slavery reached a boiling point.
  • The Election of 1860

    The Election of 1860
    Abraham Lincoln wins the election and becomes the POTUS. After many Southern States began to secede from the Union.
