Compromise of 1850
Plan that was created by Henry Clay that satisfied both the North and South. Senator Stephen A Douglaus was in charge of winning passage. Most believed that this compromise saved the union. -
Fugitive Slave Act
This act helped owners recapture runaway or escaped slaves. People accused of being fugitives were put into trial,and almost always made slaves. They had no right to trial by jury. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This bill angered the opponents of slavery.This bill caused the riddance of the Missouri Compromise.Southerners were happy about this bill,as Douglaus had hoped. -
Popular Sovereignty
This was a system where residents vote to decide an issue. This was used to get the South's support. This system was used to get rid of the Missouri Compromise. -
Republican Party
Many Northern Whigs joined this party. This party was against slavery. The Republicans gained plenty of strength in the North quickly. -
Crittenden Plan
Plan presented to congress in 1861. It did not pass. Compromise hopes were fading quickly. -
