    U.S attempt to purchase Cuba
    The US always had their eyes on Cuba.1854 Diplomats told Pierce they should buy Cuba from Spain. Spain said they would rather see them sink into the ocean. If Spain didn’t sell Cuba to the US the will have the risk of having got it taken. The diplomats tired to purchase Cuba to make it a slave state. They were using the Ostend Manifesto. The press got ahold and leaked it to the newspaper. When the Diplomats found out they denied. It is important because it showed that we wanted and empire.

    Cuba’s first war for independence was also called the 10 year war. It was cuba’s fight for independence from spain. Cuba went against spain and it was not successful. In 1886 the Cuban people force Spain to abolish slavery. It is important because it cause America to in investing in the sugar cane plantations

    Jose Marti led Cuba's second war for independence
    Jose Marti was a Cuban poet and journalist who had dealt with imprisonment and deportation during the ten years war. He lead the Cubans against Spain and they destroyed properties owned by Americans. This is important because Jose Marti was a larger part of the war, he lead cubans against spain and destroyed properties the belonged to Americans. He is also important because without him wrecking american property other Amercians wouldn’t have gotten so mad.

    Valeriano Weyler was sent to Cuba by Spain
    The Cubans revolted so spain Sent Weyler to restore order. Weyler wanted to stop the rebellion before the US got involved with it. Weyler put Central & Western Cuba into concentration camps. Camp's had barbed wire so people could not get out. The people in the camps could not give aid to the rebels. Estimate of 300,00 Cubans filled the camp, people died from hunger and disease It is important because it shows they didn’t want US to be a part of it, the camps played a part in the US to come.

    The Yellow Press didn't have good research, falsified information, and used shocking headlines to make it seem like the Spanish were treating the Cubans worse then they were. Said that kids were being fed to sharks, this was to make the Americans sympathize. This was important because The Yellow Press help start the war if the majority of Americans wouldn’t have sympathized with Cubans we wouldn’t have wanted to get into the war. This is also important because they spread the D-lone letter.

    The explosion of the USS Maine happened on February 15, 1898, after the De Lome letter was released. It was blown up in the harbor of Havana. President McKinley orders the U.S.S Maine to save our people from the violence in Cuba. No one knew the real reason why it blew up. The Yellow Press wrote an article called “The Warship Maine was split in two by an enemy’s secret infernal machine.” but thought Spain did it. It's important because it's one of the reasons why the war started.

    The US declared war on Spain on April 20, 1898, after the ship the U.S.S Maine was blown up in the ports of Cuba. They wanted to liberate the people in Cuba because they were being mistreated, and we “wanted to spread democracy.” This is important because even though we say we don’t want to form an empire we still are starting this war to get one. We lie when we say the only reasons are to spread democracy and to liberate Cubans.

    The Spanish Army under the guidance of Pascual Cervera tried to gain access to the southern coast to Cuba. This attempt was unsuccessful tough, and the ships ended up getting blocked by United States ships under the command of William Sampson. This event is important because this sets up the start of the war. This is also important because it highlights how well equipped our military was, seeing that it could stop the other Spanish ships from coming in.

    U.S. attack on Manila Bay
    At Manila Bay in the Philippines, the U.S. Asiatic squadron destroyed a Spanish Pacific fleet. This resulted in the fall of the Philippines and it also contributed to the united states winning the war. This is important because we had destroyed an entire fleet and done a lot of damage.

    General Nelson A Miles’ troops were able to secure the island by late August. They signed an armistice with Spain and after they raised an American flag. After “The Treaty of Paris” was signed and ended the Spanish-American war. Puerto Rico officially gave its accession to the U.S. This is important because we had been able to secure the island, Puerto rico had given up its accession, and the war was ended with the treaty.

    Battle of San Juan hill
    Also known as “Battle for San Juan Heights.” Shafter ordered an attack on the village of El Caney and San Juan Hill. He wanted to capture El Caney before attacking San Juan Hill. Spanish held off 10 times their # most the day. The Americans split up into two flanks to take the Hills. Lieutenant John Miley was one of the first up Kettle Hill with the black soldiers. San Juan was taken after. This is important because they involved black soldiers and shows how hard some of the soldiers had fight.

    Armistice is signed between the U.S. and Spain
    This was basically a peace treaty between the US and Spain. It was not permanent, but it halted war between the Spanish and the Americans. This is important because it halted the war against the Spanish and the Americans. It also set us up for the treaty of Paris which in return allowed us to buy the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico and Cuba.

    MacArthur led his brigade in the capture of Manila. The Spanish were being negotiated so they wouldn't put up a big fight. In return the Spanish would keep Emilio and the FIlipino resistance. The Spanish then surrendered. This is important because it shows that we had a strong military that WAS getting things done. It also showed that we were willing to put down money so then we could win the Philippines, and build an empire.

    The Treaty of Paris of December 10th of 1898 was signed by the US and Spain. Spain now has to liquidate all of its positions. This would be Cuban, Puerto Rico, islands of Guam, the west indies, and the Philippines. They sold the Philippines to the US for twenty million. This is important because we are now building an empire even though we say we don't want one. This also shows the real reason why we got into the war: us wanting an empire.

    American forces landed in cuba and as soon as they did they began to cover santiago. There were African americans, the regular army, and rough riders. It did not This is important because it showed our efforts on how we invaded Cuba. It also important because it also showed that we were willing to put african americans in the war but we weren't willing to treat them right.

    The publication of the De Lome Letter happened in February 1998. The Spanish Wrote a letter about the president, McKinley, saying he was “weak” and other stuff. The Spanish minister he was going to send it to the United States. But the rebels stole the letter from the post office and leaked it to the newspaper. Than which the president saw the newspaper. The Spanish tried to apologize but they were still mad. The reason why it's important is that it's another reason why the war started.

    During the Naval blockade the Spanish ships were not allowed to pass through to coast of Cuba. As a result the Spanish attempted to gain access to the harbor. This then proposed the American ships to destroy the Spanish ships. This is important because now that the naval fleet is destroyed we can invade cuba and start fight there. This is also important because it sets up the fighting in cuba.
