Humble Beginings
This was the beging of reasearch on Uranium and its properties. People were hoping to find some use for it. At the time it had alot less use that it does today and it was dangerous and hard to find. It was a huge leap forward to find that it could do something for us. -
Finding a Use
Someone finally found a use for Uranium. British physicists found that a certain isotope of Uranium could make a devastating explosion when used correctly. Britain quickly set to work producing a nuclear explosive, but did not succed. The committe that reasearched it in Britain was eventually absorbed by the Manhattan Project. -
The Public Release
In the month, famous physcicists came out and said that we should be stockpiling uranium ore. Most people were sceptical until the reason were released. They came out and said that we were possibly producing "extremely powerful bombs of a new type." They were talking about needing things like the ore to produce it. -
Tube Alloys
The British counterpart to the Manhattan project was brought in. They refused to work with the Americans because they felt like it would be a danger if the US and Britain went to war. A bomb of that much power could destroy most of the UK This is the project that eventually merged with the Manhattan. -
Atomic Bomb Reasearch Aprroved
President Franklin D. Roosevelt approves to allow a committe to begin production and testing of nuclear weaponry. This was a huge leap forward as no one else at the time was daring enough to try this technology. It was also an asset as we were entering WWII soon, because of Pearl Harbor. It was something that struck fear into enemies, who hoped to end the war before we could make one. -
The First Meeting
The first meeting of the Manhattan project came together. They were very energetic and built up, becuase of the recent bombing of Pearl Harbor. They were bringing in some of the most effective planners and scientists of the age. They began with a good start. -
The Big Merge
The Link
Tube Alloys didn't have much in the way of resources and manpower. They were falling far beyond were the Americans were. So Tube Alloys offered up the collaboration instead of the US. This pushed the production of the first nuclear bomb. -
Management And Name Change
You may be wondering how it got the name the Manhattan Project. During the early portion of the project, it was the S1 Committe. Now, the project was handed over to Colonel James C. Marshall of the Army Engineers, who had an office on Broadway, Manhattan, NYC. -
Merger Failing?
The Link
The merger of Tube Alloys and the Manhattan Project is failing. The British are trying to control it, and aren't paying for any of the development costs. The US is demanding that they pay at least some because they benifit from it. It is going downhill fast. -
We have enough?
A survey was conducted to show how much uranium we had stockpiled and are in the deposits. It showed that we had sufficient resources to create this weapon. It was one of the best things for the scientists of the day. It would say that they had some reasearch materials left. -
The Flip
The Us is flipping the way things work to try to get the British to pay some and to help. They are telling the British very little. The British wants this very badly and the US are threatening to tell them nothing if they don't help. The UK is breaking down a bit. -
Budgeting-In a Good Way
Some of the executives on the Manhattan project began to set the budget for resources and materials. They ended up with about $54 million for construction by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. This was used throughout the most of the project. Some other budget injections were made, but this was the most. -
The Test
The first nuke ever dentonated was a test in New Mexico. It was mainly to see if their creation worked and to measure the destruction it would do. It was not the gun-type bomb that ended WWII. I was the kind of bomb that the Underwear Bomber used. -
Wiping Hiroshima off The Map
The Source
This was the first of two nuclear explosive used in acutaul military combat. The Americans were preparing for an all-out invasion of Japan. This plan was the only way to avoid losing hundreds of soldiers in a war that wouldn't matter. So, Little Boy(the nuke) was dropped on Hiroshima. -
Nuking Nagasaki
The Source
The Japanese didn't surrender after Hiroshima was bombed, unlike what the Americans had hoped. The Japanese said that they would recover if that was all. So the US tried again. Fat Man (Again, the bomb) was dropped on Nagasaki. This finally ended WWII
