The Life of William Golding

    Birth
    Golding was born to Alex and Mildred Golding in Cornwall, England. During his early school years, he attempted to write a novel and failed. Being a frustrated child with no creative outlet, he turned to bullying his peers. He went on to attend Oxford University and studied English literature. He published a book of poems, cleverly named Poems, before he graduated.

    After graduating from Oxford and having a few odd and end jobs, he decided to follow his father in teaching. Golding taught at Bishop Wordsworth in Salisbury. He got married around this time to Ann Brookfield and had two children with her. He stayed at his teaching position for over 20 years, less a few years in the navy.

    Golding enrolled in the Royal Navy in 1940. He was enrolled for the better part of six years, developing a love for the sea and for sailing. When World War II ended in 1945, Golding returned to his teaching job.
  • Lord of the Flies

    Lord of the Flies
    After 21 total rejections, Golding published his book Lord of the Flies at the age of 43. A film was made about Lord of the Flies in 1963. Golding received a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988.

    Golding passed in 1993 due to a heart attack in Falmouth, Cornwall. His writing he working on before his death, The Double Tongue was published after his death. Golding's writings were appreciated and acknowledged much more after his death and Golding has become legendary in the field of literature.
