Refusal to Register with the Boer Republic Transvaal
While in South Africa, Gandhi and others refuse to register with the Boer Republic of Transvaal, which is under Bristish control. This was the beginning of non-violent, non-cooperation movement among the Indian people there. -
Agreement with Transvaal
Mohandas Gandhi is able to reach an agreement with the Prime Minister of the Transvaal, ending the protests. -

Gandhi returns home to India where he is received as a hero. -
Non-Cooperation Movement
Along with the Indian National Congress, Gandhi let the Non-Cooperation Movement, which was characterized by non-violent resistance and civil disobedience. The movement would last until February of 1922. -
Gandhi's Salt March
On March 12, 1903, Gandhi travelled 320 km to Dandi to make his own salt. 10,000 people joined him on the 24 day journey. This was to protest the British Salt Tax. -

Gandhi's Wife Dies
Gandhi's wife dies on February 22, 1944. She supported Gandhi's work until her death. -

India becomes independent of British rule on August 15, 1947. -
Gandhi is Assassinated
Gandhi is assassinated by a Hindu nationalist, Nathuram Vinayuk Godse, on his way to evening prayers.
