Postal Stamps come into use.
Postage stamps are introduced making it easier to send mail and support post companies and easier and cheaper (since mail cost is now based on weight) for relatives to communicate long distance. -
The Province of Canada is formed
By recomendation of Lord Durham, sent from England to examine the rebellions of 1837, Upper and Lower Canada are united to relieve strife between citizens and politics. He believed that if there were more loyal English citizens, and the French-Canadians were Anglicized there would be less difference, building peace. -
Britain implements Tariffs
Starting in 1846 The Corn Laws implemented by Britain were heavy taxes on imported goods, making imports much more expensive.

Potato Famine
Overwhelmed by 104,000 immagrants from Ireland, Canada takes on an extra quarter of its own population from Irish people escaping the Potato Famine. 1700 deaths from typhus including docters nurses and other medical aid. -

Over 3200 kilometres of rail track are laid.
The Private company Grand Trunk Rail-Way refuses to lay track for the government, so the Canadian Pacific Railway company is created. They are created to lay track into British Columbia as part of their agreement to join the confederation. In total both companies lay more than 3200 kilometres of track. -
Trade barriers are lowered
A mutual agreement between Britian and the United States of America allows for the lowering of trade barrires making trade free and easier for small companies to flouish and a better distribution of trade.

Sir John A. Macdonald was the first Prime-Minister, who was in office for a total of 19 years. -
The Assassination of Thomas D'arcy McGee
Thomas D'arcy McGee was a Father of Federation and very outspoken opponent of the Fenian group. The Fenians where and Irish group who where simliar to today's IRA.
They had staged a failed revolution in Ireland 1867. Thomas was the first Canadian victim of assasination, assassinated by Patrick J. Whelan who was promptly arrested convicted and hanged, the last public elocution in Canada. -
The Purchase of Rupert's land.
When The Hudson's Bay company sold Rupert's land to Canada it threatened western livelihood in ways like less jobs for traders, especially the adapting Metis people who where hired frequently. The loss of land also meant a declined market on furs, skins and other products that the HBC sold.
Today the Hudson's Bay Company still survives as The Bay. ( specific date not clear)
