    The First Australian Bombing; Darwin
    The first attack on Australia was 10 weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack. There were two air raids in total. The first started at 10 am and went for 40 minutes; the second one an hour later, went for about 20. 250 people were killed and between 300-400 were injured. 20 aircrafts were destroyed and eight ships at the harbour sank. After the bombing, half of Darwin’s people evacuated. 278 service men went missing. They probably fled with all the chaos.

    This attack was the second worst air raid in Australia. It was 1 hour long. 70 people died and 40 were injured. 23 year old Pilot Officer Frank Russell was aboard one of the flying boats; soon afterwards he described, “A scene of ghastly devastation! Our flying boats all over the place were sending up huge clouds of black smoke. All around us there fell a ceaseless stream of tracer bullets. The Dutch Dorniers had had been full of women and kids, waiting to take off to safety."

    There was no major damage. There were 3 attacks on the harbor. The bombs fell harmlessly into the harbor or ranges behind the town. The last bomb fell on the racecourse and broke the windows of houses near the racecourse. There wasn’t much damage, but made allies have to focus on N.T.

    In 1942 at Port Hedland, a young soldier named Private Adams was killed when up to 70 bombs were dropped on their airfield. The town of 640 people, was attacked on July 30 and August 17, 1942.
