The reaping day
The book starts with Katniss and gale outside of District 12 in the forest. They were hunting and gathering food to eat when they later they day could celebrate that they did not get chosen to compete in the hunger games, and that they have at least one more year to live. -
The reaping
Primrose Everdeen is chosen for the games but Katniss volunteers to take her sister's place as tribute. The boy tribute is Peeta Melark. Katniss says goodbye to her family and friends and get the mockingjay pin from her friend Madge. After the goodbyes they board the train to the Capitol. -
The Capitol day 1
The train arrives in the Capitol and Katniss and Peeta gets ready for the tribute parade. -
The parade of the 74th hunger games
The tributes rides in chariots towards the president of Panem, Snow. They are shown off to the people in the Capitol. Each District will have their own stylist who will make their costumes for their stay in the capitol. Katniss's stylist is Cinna. He helps her make an impression in the Capitol. The parade is also the first time the sponsors will se the tributes, and they decide who they want to sponsor for the games. -
The training
The tributes get three days to train before the games. Katniss's mentor Haymitch tells her not to show the other tributes her skills before the games. In the training center they can practice knowledge of the nature, and train with different weapons, like throwing knives and sword skills. -
Privat session
The last day of training every tribute has a privat session with the game makers, where they get a score between 1 to 12 based on their skills. The score gets announced in the evening. Katniss gets upset by the game makers and shoots an arrow straight into the crowd of game makers. She still manage to get 11 points and that is the best score of al the tributes. -
Coaching
The day after the privat session, Katniss and Peeta are coached by Effie and Haymitch. They learn how to behave in the interview and Katniss figures out how to walk with high heels and a dress. -
Interview
The last night in the Capitol, and the last night before the game starts, every tribute has a three minutes long interview with the host Caesar Flickerman. Katniss explains how she feels about the game and how she will try to win for her sister Prim. At this time Peeta also confesses his love for Katniss. -
Before the game
On the starting day of the game Katniss and the other tributes get shipped to the arena by a hovercraft. They receive a tracing device so the game makers know where they are at any time. Then they are transported under the arena and get ready for the game, Katniss says goodbye to Cinna before entering the tube that's gets her to the arena. -
The Bloodbath
The game begins. The first minutes of the game is called the bloodbath, because almost half of the tributes die during the first hour of the game. Katniss is almost killed by Clove (District 2, female) but she flees with a backpack and a knife Clove threw at her. Eleven tributes die in the bloodbath, but Katniss and Peeta both survive the first day. -
Day 1
This night, Katniss meets the careers when they are out hunting. She gets surprised when she sees Peeta has joined the career pack. Luckily she is high up in a tree, so they don't find her. -
Day 2 and 3
Katniss struggles to find water. Haymitch, the mentor, doesn't send her water, so Katniss doubts whether that she has any sponsors. Right when she is about to die of dehydration, she finds a small "pool" of water. -
Day 4
Katniss wakes up by a forest fire. Katniss get badly burnt on one of her legs and some small burns on her hands. She arrives at a river where she takes care of her wounds. When she lies in the water, the careers come and chase her in to the forest. The careers do not catch her because she managed to climb a tree, but they wait for her beneath the tree. -
Night day 4
Being in the tree, she gets her first sponsor gift, witch is medicine for her burns. In the night Katniss sees Rue up in the tree right next to her. Rue points her finger at a nest of tracker jackers over the careers camp. In the morning ,before the careers wake up, she drops the nest down at them. Katniss get stung by some of the tracker jackers, but manages to steal a bow and arrow from one of the careers who died in the attack. Cato runs after her, but Peeta saves her. Then she pass out. -
Day 7
Katniss and Rue teams up after two days, when Rue helps Katniss after the episode with til tracker jackers. Rue helps Katniss to heal her stings and Katniss provide food for them both. They make up a plan to destroy the food and supplies in the career's new camp by the cornucopia. -
Day 8
Katniss goes to destroy the supplies while Rue distract the careers. Katniss triggers the mines around the supplies, and the supplies gets ruined in the explosion. Right after Katniss blows up the supplies, she hears Rue scream her name. When Katniss finally finds Rue, Rue is fatally wounded after a career piercing her with a spear. To show her respect, Katniss lays flower around her and sings to her during her last moments of life. -
Day 8 and 9
The same night the game makers announce that two tributes can be crowned victors if they are both from the same District. The next day Katniss goes around looking for Peeta. She finds him badly injured by the river. She helps him as much as she can, but he has a deep cut in the thigh that needs medicine. -
The feast
The game makers announce that they are holding a feast, where every tribute will receive something they really need, and they may have medicine for Peeta. Peeta don't want Katniss to go to the feast and risk her life for him, but Katniss still goes. At the feast Katniss nearly get killed by Clove, but manage to survive and get the medicine for Peeta. -
The cave
The medicine works and Peeta gets much better. Katniss and Peeta waits in the cave during a rainstorm. Katniss acts up the romance between her and Peeta and is rewarded with a large meal from their sponsors. -
Hunting
With only a few tributes left in the game, Peeta and Katniss goes out hunting. They split up and Peeta finds night-locks. When a cannon sounds, with indicate the death of a tribute, she fears Peeta is dead, but it was actually Foxface (female tribute from District 5) who died. She had followed them and by mistake eaten the poisonous berries. -
Cornucopia
Katniss and Peeta discovers the rivers and lakes have dried up, forcing them closer and closer to the cornucopia and the remanding tributes. -
The mutts
The game makers place mutts into the arena. The mutts chase Katniss, Peeta and Cato up on the cornucopia where they are forced to fight. Katniss shoot Cato and Peeta pushes him off the cornucopia down to the chasing mutts. Peeta is also badly injured and is losing a lot of blood. It takes almost a whole night before Cato dies, because he has armour on. He dies after Katniss shoots him in the head with an arrow, and Katniss and Peeta thinks they have won the game. -
The final
The game makers announce that the previous rule change where two tributes can win is cancelled, leaving only one victor. They understand the capitol only wanted an interesting final where the "star crossed lovers" had to fight each other. They both resist, and attempted double suicide by eating night-locks. To avoid that, the game makers allow them both to win because they need a victor. This is the first time in history and is seen as an demonstration towards the Capitol and president Snow. -
The winners
Katniss and Peeta returns to the Capitol where they are crowned winners. They also have to watch hi-lights from the game, and get interviewed. -
District 12
Katniss and Peeta returns to district 12 victorious. They won the 74th annual hunger games and are crowned the 2nd and 3rd victors of district 12. The book ends after Peeta finds out that Katniss's love for him only was an act and a strategy to win the game.
