The reaping
During the reaping for the 74th Hunger Game, Katniss' 12 year old sister, Primrose, gets chosen to be the female tribute of district 12. Katniss volunteers to take her place. Peeta gets chosen to be the male tribute. -
The Capitol
Katniss and Peeta arrive at the capitol along with their district escort, Effie, and mentor, Haymitch. There they get ready for the tribute parade, where Katniss gets the nickname 'Girl on fire' thanks to her flaming dress, designed by Cinna. -
Training
Tributes receive three days of training before the Hunger Games. The tributes can train their weapon and survival skills. On the third day they have to show their chosen skill to the game makers and they get scored. Katniss gets an 11 thanks to her bow and arrow skills. Peeta receives an 8. -
Interviews
After training the tributes get dressed up by their stylist so they can have a live interview with Ceasar where they discuss the Hunger Games and their experience in the capitol. -
The Hunger Games
Katniss grabs a backpack and runs away from the cornucopia. Katniss soon realizes thet Peeta has joined the career pack. She survives a couple days alone, she ends up killing a girl from the career pack by making a tracker jacker nest hit the pack. She gets stung by them and passes out. Rue, a girl from district 11, finds her and heals her. They have an alliance until Rue ends up getting killed by a boy from district 1. She honors Rue's death by surrounding her with flowers. -
The Hunger Games
Katniss realizes that Peeta was protecting her all along from the career pack since they wanted to kill her. Seneca, head game maker, announces that both tributes from one district can win. Katniss and Peeta find each other. Katniss risks going to the cornucopia to get the medicine to heal Peeta's leg injury. She pretends to be in love with Peeta so they can get sponsors, meanwhile Peeta isn't pretending. -
The end of the 74th Hunger Games
Once they're both healed, they head towards the cornucopia. There they fight a wolf pack and Cato. After Cato dies, Seneca announces that there can only be one winner. They both agree to kill themselves, Seneca panics and announces they both won. -
Back at the capitol
Katniss and Peeta get out of the arena and get taken to the doctors. There they're both healed and Peeta gets a new leg since he hurt it badly during the games. Katniss ends up getting a replacement aid for her ear since she ended up going deaf in an ear during the games.
They have their interviews with Caeser and then get on the train to go back to District 12. Katniss confesses to Peeta that she has never been in love with him and that it was all for the capitols entertainment. -
The victory tour
After 6 months of living in the victors village, Katniss and Peeta have to go on their victory tour. The tour is when they visit all of the districts, they say a speech and honour the dead tributes. During the tour Katniss and Peeta have to pretend to be in a relationship again since the capitol believes that they're together. Before the tour Snow visited Katniss telling her that she has to convince him thats she's in love with Peeta since he knew the relationship was fake. -
The capitol
Katniss and Peeta arrive at the capitol and have an interview with Caeser. During the interview Peeta proposes to Katniss. Then they have a dinner banquet at Snow's mansion, there she realizes that the mockingjay symbol (from her mockingjay pin she wore during the 74th hunger games) became popular in capitol fashion. They leave on the train in the morning. -
District 12
When they get back they have dinner at the mayor's house, where Katniss realizes that there has been an uprising in district 8.
A new harsher head peacekeeper arrives, and laws are enforced much more strictly. Gale is caught poaching and is punished by being slashed and whipped. Katniss tries to protect him but also gets whipped until Haymitch intervenes. Prim and her mother heal them both.
The hob is burned down and the mines close. District 12 starves as there is no income. -
Bridal photoshoot
Katniss's prep team arrive to do her bridal photoshoot. They say things that make Katniss suspect that Districts 3 and 4 have had uprisings.
The photos from Katniss's shoot are aired all over Panem and so is the announcement of what the third Quarter Quell will be like: "the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors". District 12 only has three victors (two males, one female), Katniss and either Peeta or Haymitch will be going back to the arena. -
The third Quarter Quell
The reaping for the third Quarter Quell (75th Hunger Games) takes place. Katniss is, of course, chosen, as is Haymitch, but Peeta volunteers to take his place. They are taken to the train immediately, and are not permitted any goodbyes. -
The Capitol
The tributes arrive at the Capitol. They meet their stylists and get ready for the chariot ride. Before the ride Katniss meets Finnick (winner of the 65th Hunger Games).
They have their training sessions.
They perform for the Gamemakers and get their scores. Katniss and Peeta both score a 12.
The tributes have their interviews. Cinna makes a subtle rebellious move. Peeta announces that Katniss is pregnant.
Before Katniss enters the arena, she sees Cinna getting dragged off by Peacekeepers. -
The 75th Hunger Games
The Games begin. Katniss teams up with Finnick, Mags and Peeta. They receive a spile for collecting water in the trees. That night, they're hit by poisonous gas, and Peeta is seriously injured while Mags is killed. They are then attacked by mutts.
They team up with Wiress, Beetee, and Johanna. Katniss figures out how the arena and its traps work. Wiress is killed by Gloss. The next trap the group is caught in involves jabberjays that perfectly mimic the screams of their loved ones. -
The end of the third Quarter Quell
Beetee comes up with an idea to electrocute the other tributes, but the plan backfires. At the last moment, Katniss shoots an arrow at the force field surrounding the arena, causing multiple explosions that burst open the arena. She's rescued by Heavensbee in a District 13 hovercraft, as are Beetee and Finnick. Peeta, Johanna, and Enobaria are captured by the Capitol. -
Bombing in District 12
The electricity in District 12 is cut, and then fifteen minutes later it's firebombed. About 800 people escape, including Gale and his family, as well as Mrs. Everdeen and Prim.
The refugees from District 12 are rescued by District 13. Katniss, Beetee, and Finnick arrive soon after. -
District 13
The refugees begin settling into life in District 13. Prim and Mrs. Everdeen begin working in the hospital. At first, Katniss stays in the hospital, where she is being medicated to manage her pain and emotions, but they also cause hallucinations. She speaks to doctors regularly. As time goes on, they begin to slowly get her off of her medications, and start talking to her about wanting her to be the face of their revolution. After a time, she moves into a compartment with her mother and Prim. -
Visit to District 12
Katniss and Gale (who stays in the helicopter) return to visit the remains of District 12, having refused to cooperate with anyone from District 13 until she does so. She brings Buttercup back for Prim, among other things. That evening, Peeta is shown on TV, being interviewed by Caesar Flickerman. -
The Mockingjay
Katniss begins her training and preparation to be the face of the rebellion, also known as the Mockingjay. She goes to District 8 to film a propo spot at the site of bombing that had occurred. While there, she's trapped in another bombing, and ends up in the hospital after returning to 13.
Peeta, looking much worse compared to before, does another television interview with Caeser.
Katniss is released from the hospital. She and Gale go to District 12 for interviews with Cressida. -
District 13 bombing
Peeta is shown on TV again. He gives a warning to Katniss that everyone in 13 will be dead by morning a lockdown occurs. Everyone is sent to underground bunkers. Prim barely makes it because she goes back for Buttercup. Bombs fall periodically, five rounds in total.
After 24 hours, everyone is allowed to leave. Katniss is taken to film propo spots confirming that the Capitol hasn't killed her. Katniss goes into hysterics when she realizes that Peeta is being tortured because of what she says. -
Rescue at the Capitol
A rescue team that Gale is a part of is sent into the Capitol to rescue the prisoners (Peeta, Johanna and Annie). Peeta is discovered to have been brainwashed against Katniss, and he almost strangles her when he sees her for the first time, which lands her in the hospital again.
Katniss is discharged from the hospital. Gale is kept on bedrest elsewhere, due to his injuries. -
District 2
Katniss goes to District 2 and stays there for a couple of weeks, training, helping the wounded, and filming propos.
Gale arrives in 2.
Meetings begin, trying to figure out how to take down the mountain which houses people from the Capitol military. They end up blowing it up and killing nearly everyone inside. She makes a speech to the survivors, trying to get them to join the rebellion. Someone shoots her. She's taken back to 13 and is hospitalized. The rebels end up winning the battle. -
The wedding
Katniss awakens in the hospital. She films a propo letting the rest of the world know that she's alive.
Preparations begin for Finnick and Annie's wedding.
The wedding takes place.
That night, Katniss visits Peeta. She finds out that a mission to the Capitol is being planned, and she isn't being included while Gale is (he attended regular combat training sessions, while she didn't). She convinces them to give her three weeks to make herself fit enough to go. -
Training
Katniss begins training with Johanna. That evening, they discharge themselves from the hospital, and take a compartment together.
Peeta is allowed out for dinner with the rest of the district (wearing handcuffs in case he snaps and attacks Katniss again).
Peeta (without cuffs, but with guards) starts attending the training workouts.
Johanna and Katniss are tested for field combat. Katniss passes, but Johanna has a breakdown and ends up back in the hospital. -
District 12
Katniss's squad goes to District 12, where they take a cargo car for a couple of days, then travel on foot through mountain tunnels to the Capitol train station.
Peeta arrives at their camp with no guards or cuffs. He was assigned by Coin, and Katniss deducts that she hopes that Peeta will kill her and keep her from overthrowing her as a leader. -
Landmines
While filming a propo, the squad encounters landmines and scatters. Before dying, Katniss's squad leader tells her not to trust her superiors, not to go back to the base camp, and to kill Peeta. She makes the decision to go ahead and take her small team of survivors to find and assassinate Snow. As they begin to make their way through the Capitol, they are all pronounced dead on live TV. Coin cuts into the Capitol broadcast and gives Katniss's eulogy. -
Tigirs
The squad (what remains) travels in secret and they manage to get help from Tigris, a former stylist for the Hunger Games. She lets them hide out in her shop.
The Capitol government publicly rescinds their death proclamations for Katniss and her group, and bounties are put on their heads. -
Attacks from the rebels
Capitol refugees, running from attacks from the rebels, start flooding out into the streets and public areas. It's unsafe for the squad to stay in Tigris's shop, so they leave (besides Peeta, who doesn't go with them due to his behavior being too unpredictable), following the crowd of people. While hiding among the refugees, they're spotted, and Peacekeepers begin shooting into the crowd at random to try to get at them. -
Attacks from the rebels
Bombs are activated. Snow uses Capitol children as a human shield. A hovercraft drops parachutes down, and the children, thinking that they're food and medicine, take them but they turn out to be bombs that explode once touched. Rebel medics that were flown in from District 13, Prim among them, immediately rush in to help, and many of them are killed (Prim included) when a second wave of parachutes is dropped. Katniss breaks, and is taken to a rebel-controlled Capitol hospital. Snow is captured. -
The end
Katniss is released from the hospital and sent to live with her mother in a room in what had been Snow's mansion. Snow himself is also imprisoned in the mansion.
The rebels hold a vote and decide to hold a new Hunger Games but with the people of the Capitol. To start off the new Hunger Games, Coin decides to have Katniss kill Snow. Katniss realizing that Coin is not who she thought she was, decides to kill Coin and end the Hunger Games once and for all. Snow then laughs, coughs, and dies. -
Epilogue
Over many years, Katniss very slowly starts to get better. She and Peeta settle down and start a new life in District 12. Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch begin to put together a memory book of all the people that she and her loved ones have lost. Katniss and Peeta end up having two kids, Willow and Rye.
