    German Tribes invade England
    (did not have an actual exact date, the time was 5th century AD)The Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes crossed the North Sea and invaded England. Before they did the people of Britain spoke Celtic but these tribes brought the language called Englisc.

    The German tribes spoke a language called Englisc and then it evovled into Old English. Old English looks nothing like English today. But many modern words have Old Englishj roots. Old English was spoken till about 1100.

    William the Conqueror invades and takes over England. He brings a language similar to French. When William becomes the King this French becomes the language of the court and English was used for every day life.

    At the end of Middle English, a sudden change occured, The Great Vowel Shift. During this time everyone started pronouncing vowels, shorter and shorter. This was also the time of the Renaissance, which means many new invention such as printing. Now there was printing and a common language to print with. Shakespeare came along too. The Early Mordern English Period ended around 1800.
