  • Establishment of The Perkins School for the Blind 1829

    Establishment of The Perkins School for the Blind 1829
    The Perkins School for the Blind was created in 1829, and became the first school created for blind, visually impaired and deafblind people (Perkins School for the Blind, 2023). Since then, Perkins has created many opportunities, milestones, and curriculums to help these people be successful.
  • Council for Exceptional Children 1922

    Council for Exceptional Children 1922
    The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) was created by educators in 1922 at the Columbia University (CEC, 2023). The CEC focused on ways special education students and teachers who were apart of this environment can better their knowledge for their students. This meant establishing training, resources, policies, and standards (CEC, 2023).
  • Brown Vs. Board of Education 1954

    Brown Vs. Board of Education 1954
    In May of 1954, the supreme court ruling of Brown Vs. Board of education set out to end racial segregation and discrimination of students with disabilities in public schools.
  • Establishment of Autism Society of America 1965

    The Autism Society was founded by Doctor Bernard Rimland in 1965 (Autism Society, 2023). The autism society was created to provide resources, and information, programs surrounding autism. Doctor Bernard Rimland was most famous for writing the first book on autism entitled “Infantile Autism: The Syndrome and Its Implications for a Neural Theory of Behavior” in 1964 (Autism Society, 2023).
  • Establishment of the National Association of Down Syndrome 1979

    National Association of Down Syndrome was created in 1979 to support people with down syndrome along with their families (Preceden, 2023). Resources, education, advocating for down syndrome was essential when it came to this organization and the importance of being informed.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 1990

    The IDEA was enacted on October 30th, 1990, to ensure individuals with disabilities had proper and fair rights to education (Preceden, 2023). This meant expanding parent involvement to include an individualized education plan (IEP), and inclusive services for individuals with disabilities (Preceden, 2023).
  • Olmstead v. L.C 1999

    Olmstead v. L.C 1999
    In the June 22, 1999, Supreme court ruling of Olmstead v. L.C, it was determined that people with disabilities were not given the tools they needed that was supposed to rendered under the Americans Disability Act. The ruling determined that people with disabilities must have community-based services and accessible housing (Preceden, 2023).
  • No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) 2002

    No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) 2002
    The NCLB act was signed in January 2002 to ensure students have equal opportunities in elementary and secondary education (Preceden, 2023). This also means, that students are to be learning according to the highest standards and achievements.
  • Introduction of Response to Intervention (RTI) framework 2004

    On March 19th, 2004, RTI was introduced to help identify and support students with learning disabilities (Preceden, 2023). This multi-tiered intervention system ensures that students are supported based on their induvial needs, and that early detection can help students elevate quicker.
  • Confirmation of the UN Convention on Disability Rights by Countries 2008

    On May 3rd, 2008, the United States General Assembly created the (CRPD) to protect individuals with disabilities within education and society (Preceden, 2023). Also, ensuring their rights, dignity was protected as well (Preceden, 2023).
