Skateboarding is started
Skateboarding started in California in the late 1940's and early 1950's because surfers wanted to simulate surfing outside of water. No one really knows the exact date that skateboarding started or the person who thought of the idea. The first skateboards were wooden boxes with roller skate wheels put onto the bottom. -
First Skateboarding Competition
In 1963 the first skateboarding competition is held. Skateboarding became more popular during this time and companies started having skateboarding competitions. -
Urethane Wheels
Urethane skateboard wheels are created by Frank Nasworthy. These wheels are similar to the wheels that are used today. -
Popularity Crashed
In 1965 skateboarding suddenly lost its popularity. Companies stopped making skateboards and people who still wanted to skate had to make their own boards. -
First Skateboard movie
In 1975 the first movie about skateboarding came out called "Spinnin' Wheels". From 1973-1975 companies expirement with skateboard decks. They tried using aluminum, wood and more. -
Street Skating
In the 80's street skating becomes more popular and skaters start using walls and rails. SKating companies become more common. -
Skating is More Mainstream and Accepted
In the late 90's skating appears in commericials for a lot of things and even influence fashion trends. -
First Extreme Games
The first Extreme Games was a sucessful event in Rhode Island that helped make skateboarding more acceptable and popular. -
Skateboarding Becomes More Common
In the 2000's skateboarding becomes more popular. Young children can even skate but it is most popular for teens and young adults. -
Go Skateboarding Day
Go skateboard day. The holiday was created by the International Association of Skateboard Companies to make skateboarding more popular and accessible throughout the world.
